There should be a conical point on the puller so it does not touch the threads in the crank.

Did you remove the bolt that holds the balancer on?

I am guessing your car is a 99+????

I believe I had the duck foot as snug to the stock pulley as I could, then turned the center bolt to start backing it off the crank.

bolt through ducks foot then attach ducks foot to pulley with the 3 bolts, then start turning the center bolt to remove the balancer & pulley.

Here is an excellent how-to.

dont you loosten the bolt a bit then put the puller on it and the force applied to the bolt pulls the balancer and pully out, just make sure the bolt has slack in it else the head of the bolt will meed the balancer and it wont go no where.

also... make SURE you tq the pulley to 125 ftlbs... i didnt get mine tight enough and it triggered a CEL light multiple misfiring.... so tq it down with a tq wrench not just an impact gun.

Torque it with the belt on so it doesn't spin, incase you didn't figure it out on your own.

You can also lock the engine in place at the flywheel if you remove the starter.

Which bolt are you referring to?
You remove the crank bolt then attach the pulley remover.
