There is a special refill procedure for the 4v ford engines and coolant. I'm trying to figure out why you needed to add coolant for an oil filter adapter...

If I was you and didnt know much about cars I would take my vehicle to a ford dealer. They can drain and fill the coolant (not just drain the radiator but also drain the engine itself) and use a vacuum system to suck the air out of the coolant track and then they can release the vacuum and it will pull the coolant into the engine. Works quite well.
I have NO idea how an oil filter got into this mix~ unless by adaptor you are talking about the stock oil cooler (not sure if mach 1's have this). They can become loose and should be tightened. Also note to never over tighten your oil filter as this will help it start leaking.

greetings
many thanks to all who replied. Original problem was an oil leak behind where the filter mounts. Replaced the oil filter adapter gasket and the problems ensued. And yes you are correct it has a coolant port. I filled the coolant through the air bleeder and kept on bleeding the air out and forcing it out with pressure through the expansion tank. I still may take it to the dealer and have them use that 350 dollar vac deal to get the system completely right.
Thank you all again for your timely response to my problem.

This is very simple process you can do yourself at home. I've done it serveral times without issue. The procedure is outlined in your user's manual also.
First remove the cross over cap and radiator cap. Next pour coolant solution in through the cross over until you are at the top of the fill line on the radiator tank. Now install the cap on the radiator tank. Continue to fill water through the cross over until it is full. Replace the cross over cap. Start the car and allow it to come up to operating temperature (needle in the middle of the stock gauge). Shut the car off and let it cool down to ambient. Remove the cross over cap and fill it back up. Turn the car on and bring it back up to operating temperature.
Continue this process until you remove the cross over cap and it is full after the car has cooled down after one of these heat cycles.
