ANYTIME you apply brakes? Or just when you are at idle to stop?

It will die in gear or in neutral coming into a stop.

I'm not sure what the other guys will say, but I suggest starting with the throttle position sensor. It should be around 30-40 bucks. I had an 87 T-bird with the 5.0, and it had sporatic idle probs. Sometimes at a light, it'd just die. At other times, it'd idle up. The day that I was sitting in the drive-thru at Hardee's, and I had to turn the key off to stop the burn-out from a high ass idle.......I swapped the TPS. No more probs after that.

could be the IAC (idle bypass valve) they go bad and the car wont idle, its a round cylinder thing on the throttle body or on the upper intake near the throttle body~ that may be the issue.

If I read your post correctly, the car sat for a year and a half before you bought it; correct? I'm not sure about mid-90s Fords, but I had a 93 Lumina that would lose the engine parameters whenever the battery was disconnected. For 3 or 4 drive cycles, the car would stall when stopping. It always started right back up. The computer had to "re-learn" the parameters for engine operation. This may be the case with your car if the battery was dead or if it did sit for so long.

+1 for replacing your idle bypass valve and fuel filter, even if there not the source of the problem, they will drastically help the way your car runs if they had never been replaced. you also may want to clean your Mass-Air-Flow sensor.

yea normal upkeep like fuel filter, air filter, coolant, trans fluid, and such can all mess with normal driving over time
