I know i want to start a project on my v6! its the 04 3.9! im wanting to do something. i was thinking doing a 5.4 or 5.0 swap but now im leaning back to my turbo project. i literally had a whole turbo kit for it except the down pipe and i even P&P what was going to be one of the turbo manifolds. well i ended up getting side track on another project and sold it. now im really regreting it. i LOVE turbo. the spooling sound all the with to the BOV gets me going everytime. i think i have offically made up my mind. NO SWAP. im keeping my 3.9 and turboing it. now whos done this before? i know theres some one in the mustang evolution nation who has done this. if ur this person i could really use some kinda blue print. i knwo i could copy TMAs but he was having cooling issues from what i hear. i think im gonna go BIG turbo and run low boost. i just think that would be more easier to work with than twin turbo. anyway any tips, advice, etc would be great. im all ears. and thanks for everybody who talked me out of the swap lol, turbo is def where my heart is

a single good sized (not to big) turbo is your best bet. You can run 10 psi or so and put down 300rwhp~
We have a couple turbo members on here so maybe they will chime in.

haha no problem for talking you out of it.
but unfortunately im here to talk you back into engine work haha
i dont know too much about turbos (we have a lot of great turbo guys on the forum that will be able to give some advice), but i think spectorv is dead on with the advice. i think a modest size turbo giving modest size boost is best... somewhere around 9-11psi.
check out this article regarding the 4.2 though - might want to consider it with the boost. would be an interesting project.
How to: 4.2L mustang swap

Yep DarkShadow had his TMA kit. Andy also put a safe tune on the motor cause it was stock and still had the 7.5 rear I believe it was 330/360 to the ground

Or go with a turbo 5.0. The way I see it is you'll have plenty of torque through out your powerbands

 hahahahahah
I kinda browsed around today....I didn't find ANY turbo kits for 99-04 v-6
But I DID find the hellion "hellraiser" twin turbo kit for my 96 GT. Too bad the damned turbos cost more than my car! $7500 for the twin kit hahah

if u have the money go for it lol! i would love twin turbo not only for the power but the BOV's make a sound that make me smile no matter how my days going lol! but i hear the maintence on them are hard to maintain for a daily driver. thanks for looking though man thats real cool of you. i think though im just gonna have to take my manifolds and flip flop them and weld a flange on to it then get some piping and bend it to where both manifolds connect together then to the turbo and also make a custom down pipe. i have a mig100 electric welder and big air compressor with alot of power tools so with that and some patiences i hope to make this thing work. but thanks to wiarumas and the others im now gonna start building a 4.2 first lol. i figure with a solid foundation it will be more reasonable to make a custom turbo set up a daily driver. and so thats the game plan. just not sure what to start doing first. any siggestions on parts i need to get first or what to start doin?

Sounds like a good plan.....even though the only part I really comprehend is welder, air compressor, and power tools! haha I've never been into an engine like that, so I be scared to death to even try it with my D.D......but...now if I had an extra 4.6 laying around...that'd be a different story..hehe
Goodluck with it!

BE SURE you get balancing for your engine. my co-worker a few years ago turbo'd his car and did that first, as well as reinforced his engine with new heads and titanium pistons.

yea i just kinda learn as i go too! the best way to learn about an engine is have on a stand and tear it down. it makes so much more since to me how things working so part by part come a part. i have a VG30deTT on my stand now that im rebuilding and it looks so diffucult to u get it on stand then u can just see it all and it make since. just gotta believe in ya self lol. i will probably not be running more than 10-15 psi so im not gonna try and change out pistons or anything unless i find out heads or warped and pistons need to be changed, the stang only has 60,000 miles on it so should be good, ive always been told is the rule is never turbo anything over 80,000. thanks for the help in here guys. somebody find me pics please lol

I have recently decided to also do a turbo for my v6 and since i didnt find any kits for it i went to the STS turbo site and they have a universal turbo and twin turbo kit real cheap if your intrested in that you might want to look into it these turbos mount where your muffler would go and since its got to travel back up to the intake the air has time to cool down eliminating the need for an intercooler Squires Turbo Systems - Turbocharged Innovation!

i have decided on the universal twin turbo and my thoughts are starting with 10psi because i dont know how well the blocks hold up and i will slowly increase the boost

ideally you wanna run 5 psi on all stock motor, 10 might hurt a lil bit

well i know that the stock compression ratio is 9.3:1 but i want to change the internals and lower the compression ratio closer to 8.5:1 so i can run more boost i know some guys who run 8.5 ratio on their 4 cylinder and are running 14psi or more the only thing i am worried about is the block i dont know how strong or weak the blocks are

Compression is the volume of the cylinder when the piston is at its lowest point (BDC) compared to when it's at it's highest point (TDC). When the piston reaches the top of its stroke there is still room in the cylinder for combustion, this is the combustion volume. So for instance if you have a cylinder that has a volume with 900cc with the piston inside and at the bottom and you add heads that contain 100cc for the combustion volume then you get a ratio of the (cylinder volume+combustion volume) divided by the combustion volume; so in this case there is (900cc+100cc)/100cc which is equal to 1000cc/100cc: zeros cancel out (or rather you are just reducing the fraction), so does the units, and you end up with a compression ratio of 10:1.
To increase ratio you have to increase the cylinder volume, or decrease the combustion volume (or both). Either stroking the engine (making the piston travel a longer distance inside the cylinder) or boring out the engine (shaving out the cylinder walls so the cylinder has a larger diameter) increase volume. You could also do both. Note that these will require new internals however.
