my brother is getting a laptop, and we're looking at them, want to get him a good one.. looking HP since mine has performed so well... anyway, this is what we were looking at... kind of like to stay near $1600.

Dell sucks my left nut... our Dell has been completely owned by my laptop, time and time again. And my laptop is an HP.

based on the comments, Dell seems like the best solution. HP sucks both balls, and dell only sucks one nut. So, it appears that dell would only have half the issues.
On that note, I have had no issues with dells in my past. HP's we had at my last job were destroying hard drives on a weekly basis. In a month they had to replace 47 hard drives...it was rediculous. There were addition drives that were able to be saved, but now have bad sectors. IBM's never impressed me much either. When I get around to getting a laptop, it will definitely be Dell.
EDIT: and if you are comparing your laptop with a dell desktop, there is no comparison. Dell Desktops do suck. But their laptops seem to be much better.

I just picked up a new Dell inspiron 6000 for myself, and decided to throw one in for the wife as well.
I've used mainly Comapq laptops, this is my first dell. No major complaints so far.
