your speedometer would be off.
i know tunes can be expensive, but i would recommend buying the SCT chip from americanmuscle. it will fix the speedometer (i believe) as well as get you some added HP and performance. it runs about $270 and the installation is pretty easy

the predator diable has worked great for me and very easy to use, it runs about $399 but i have also heard good things about that SCT too and it seems more affordable!

You'll see only two real issues
1) Your speedometer will be off, probably by about 7 MPH
2) The car will not "benefit" as much as it would with a tune.
The lowdown:
1) You can pick up a tuner to adjust it or you can also pick up a speed calibrator from AM for I think $30 that splices right in. Or just try to remember that you'll be seeing 7 MPH higher on the speedo than the speed you are actually going.
2) The other benefits you would see from a tune with gears is that you can fine tune how the car's computer wants to handle how all it's components are working. With a tune the PCM will know that there are gears and may help performance. It may also mean that the computer will account for a new fuel curve and the chances of decrease in MPG will be insignificant.
Basically you don't need that tune, and there are ways around it, but a tune is just usually something that goes along with the car when work is done to it. If you can't afford a tune now, and especially if you are looking at other modifications, it is a good idea to get a tune at some later point or when you are at a break in modding (after a few mods). THe tune will really help squeeze every bit out that you can of your car.

BAD IDEA! very bad.
if your car is an auto it wont shift right either, the gear shifts will be all off because ull actually be going one speed but your car will think its going another.
you must get a tune, and if your gooing for a tune get a good custom one that can benifit your car more and help it perform to its maximum capacity.

TLOK and gears are always worth it (and as long as you fine with your possible outcomes, positive and negative).

you dont have to have a tune to fix the speedometer (on some models) you can also use a speedcal unit to adjust the speedometer without altering the tune of the car~ but its a must to do one or the other.
