i posted this in the classic section with no luck maybe this will get a better response. im working on a restomod 70 mach 1. ive found a two motors (1)5.0from a late 80s mustang, its all stock with an automatic trans and un known miles $200 (2)5.0 with gt 40 heads from an explorer with 30,000 no trans $500-$700. i may buy both because they are so cheap. but are there specific year mustang 5.0s that are better or even some from other vehicles. by better i mean horsepower and durability, i dont have a lot to spend and i plan on driving the crap out of it. thanks

You may want to look for a 85 or earlier 5.0 then you wont have to worry about fuel injection. Are you sure you don't want to go with a bigger displacement engine you have a lot of room under your hood.

I think he wants fuel injection
What year are the donor cars? You will want a 89+ Mustang for the MAF (instead of speed density). If the Explorer is 97.5+ it will have GT40P heads, which are desirable but I believe require a different exhaust manifold/header than older 302/5.0 motors
They are both very similar motors. The Explorer uses a different upper intake (similar - if not the same - as the intake on a 94-95 Mustang).

isn't there some sort of stamp or tag on the blocks, that you could use to ID the year, etc? with that, you'd be able to findout what need for motormounts and shit

If you use motor mounts for a '70 302, any 302 should bolt in.
Yes, the casting number behind the starter can tell you the year of the block.

You should be able to use the same motor mounts without a problem. 1965-1970 Mustang 289, 302, 351W, 351C; 1967-1970 Mustang 390, 428; 1967-1970 Cougar 289, 302, 351W, 351C. all use the same mounts as far as I can tell.

87-92 is the ideal year range for 5.0s. They come with the forged pistons instead of the hypercraptastic ones.

that sounds good for me. it went in easier and qucker than i thought. i did it by myself in under 30 min.
i plan on rebuilding it but i dont want to do anything drastic mainly stock with some subtle upgrades. any suggestions, i dont want to spend over 1000 if i can keep from it?

The 70 302 mounts will work for any 302 or 351. The 351W or 351M would be my pick.
