I might be cheaper to find another engine honestly. Almost all shops stopped doing rebuilds because it takes too long and it's not cost effective. Expect an easy $1K to do this.

the estimate I got for a remanufactured engine from jasper motor plus install was about 5 grand, and I think that might be kinda high, but they said just for the reman motor was about 3200

You should be able to have the bottom end forged cheaper than that....

I have a friend who did the same thing in his 98 cobra...he found a local performance shop to rebuild it. He's getting it rebuilt with much better parts.

what ever you do make SURE you do NOT cut ANY corners and do it right. Also make SURE where ever you have do the work is VERY VERY trustworthy and has a VERY VERY good reputation.... many have been burnt very very bad.
If you get a bad build you will be out months, money, and time.... so taking the time and getting a contract in writing would be very good ideas You should have read the post about the guy that had his 03 cobra built and the car wsa in such bad shape it was rediculous.... he was out nearly a ton of money with a broke car to show for it (raged out to hell and back).

Really!!! I have rebuilt many engines for personal use and racing and had only one failure do to the person insisting on using the old Valve Train in a engine producing double the original HP after I tried to talk him out of it.
Rebuilt is not only a good way but to get better than original parts. The factory does not build most engines with modders in mind.

I remember reading that post. Didn't the guy send his car away tog et rebuilt, they gave him the runaround and shit, and he still hand''t gotten his car back like a year and a hlaf later?!
I think they said the guy he sent it to was driving it around claiming it was his.

should be able to jack the engine up a good bit, drop the oil pan, and get to the bearings.. however if the crank is scored then you're stuffed... when my '02 had cylinder head issues.. (knocking sounds..) pulled the heads off and found the cylinder walls scored to crap.. Ford had the block machined out, and I rebuilt it all myself.. - new bearings and all - it cost them I believe $3200.. (warranty time + parts is cheaper than non warranty.)

If you can pull your own motor and deliver it with all the parts needed...you could build it bulletproof for about $3,000. Let the builder pull the motor and replace it...add about another $1,000. If you just give the car to a builder and let them get the parts...it will run you more than $5,000.
