Hi, I have a ’96 GT 4.6. A few weeks ago the engine would die just after starting. It could be kept running with the accelerator pedal, but would fall to about 450-500RPM and then stall. When I would re-start the engine, (after the 3rd or 4th time) it would idle back at its normal RPM and run just fine. I assumed this was some “issue” with one of the many ridiculous sensors on the car because I had removed the CAT’s several months earlier. (One was plugged and I wasn’t about to pay over $500 for a part to slow down my car)
Well, now the car constantly idles at about 500RPM, and usually stalls. For some reason my AC Pumps keeps kicking off and on whenever the heater is on, (which also effects the idle because of the added load). The exhaust smells like the engine is running a little rich (unburnt gasoline smell).
Can anyone offer any advice before I take the car to the Ford dealer and pay some “technician” $500 to tell me which of the 10,000 sensors I need to replace for $10! Or would anyone like to trade a ’96 GT for a mustang (pre 1970) that my retarded ass can work on without a degree in computer engineering? Thank you!

retune? My dad's truck was having problems dying like that... it'd just start idleing lower in rpm... and lower... until vrrrrope, done. Turned out, he needed a new coil pack.

First thing I'd do is check my plugs

Thanks, I already tried the new plugs. (one of my first steps to try to find the problem was to check how the plugs were burning). Although they were slightly fouled, (from running rich), the new platinum Motorcraft plugs seemed to make no difference. Oh man, i hope i dont need new "coil packs", i can think of a lot better ways to spend that much money! $800...are you serious? I could build half a 289 for that price....damn new cars!

Just checked on fordparts.com, they have coils for under $80... I guess I'm off to the Ford Dealer after work tomorrow to have their computer make love to my computer and see what kind of mutated offspring (repair part) they can concieve...wish me luck!

Does it do this when it's cold only?

Is the R134A in your AC system low? get a guage from the autoparts store. That will make the compressor kick on and off.
Pulling off the cats will not cause any problems like this.
I don't think you have an ISO nose, and no cats is going to make the car smell a little "rich".

lol, my dad's truck would have trouble keeping speed going up a hill... when we brought my buddy's Roush back from Missouri (a 5 hour drive, going the speed limit), the truck couldn't manage above 35 miles an hour with a load.... going on level ground, uphills was just horrible. And now it pulls a FULLY loaded hay trailer just fine... 75 down the interstate, no problem.

this is probably a long shot... but the item that controls the idle is the idle bypass valve, round (cylinder) shaped item thats on the upper intake~ or there about. It controls the idle when you are out of gear (neutral) mine went out, and they tend to act up in cold weather. When they go out the car wont idle and it will die, it will also die driving around.... (as mine did)
its a long shot... but its a cheap part and easy to replace.

Thanks for all the help guys. I will try the bypass (if I can find it) lol, and i actually used an OBD reader and got the code " P 1507, Idle Speed Control Auxiliary Inputs", so I guess I am off to buy an Idle control module, errr.... unit...errr doo-hickie"
It does do it all the time, even when warmed up. It did start with the recent cold weather, so I will try the bypass 1st, then on to the module. Thanks again guys.

I ordered the new part, but of course because of the holiday it will be next week before it comes in. Just so you know i resorted to a little "creative engineering" for a quick fix. DONT LAUGH, but i wrapped the throttle stop with several layers of electrical tape until it idled at about 750RPM...lol. Oh well, good enough for now.
