Stop Lights vs. Red Lights

I was just posting in another thread and thought of something that I felt was deserving of its own thread. Of course, it really probably isn't... but anyway...
When I refer to a stop light, I usually call it a red light (I'm from AL, can't help it). I had a friend that used to always give me hell about it, saying that they are "stop lights". His reasoning was that they're not always red, which makes sense.
BUT... they're not always stop lights either. After all, some times they are "go lights" and "caution lights".
So what should we call them??? Traffic lights??? That just sounds really gay for some reason.
So my question is.... What do you call them?
This is easily the single most worthless thing I think I have ever posted... and to think... I could be studying for finals... |

red lights, although traffic lights would be more appropriate.
But they are still red lights.

the light 
you can:
turn at "the light"
stop at "the light"
go at "the light"
slow down at "the light"
make a first left after "the light"
etc...
stoplight is also ok, because technically if it wasnt there, youd just keep going. since its there, you now must stop if it tells you. its there for stopping and controlling traffic. so traffic light is ok as well, but too long to say in casual convo.

People north of Illinois call them "Stop and Go"
Red lights are what you see behind you when you don't stop for the stop light.....
