best way to protect/clean polished parts

I touched my car for the first time in months today and my valve covers look BAD. I can still see my reflection, but they are pretty cloudly. Is there anything I can do short of repolishing them? What will help to keep this from happening again next time?

mother's metal polish, or Eagle 1's Nevr-Dull polish.

i personally like Eagle 1's because it comes with a swab, so you sab it on putting alittle elbow greese to it. and then get a clean cloth and whipe it up.....

i do it all the time to my tips/wheels/front pony and it basicaly turns it into like a mirror.

i use mothers billitt aluminum polish on my manifold, alternator and ac compressor(i polished the parts) and it does 1 hell of a job
