maybe you so-calers are different, up her in the sac region, its a whole nother ballgame apparently. ref stations are only for those who get reffed by the cops for having a "illegally modified vehicle" or for state/commercial vehicles.
i really doubt you can get a carb exempt number for your modifications even if it passes smog just fine, or else i know a shitload of guys who would be doing it, and cali wouldnt be such a bad place afterall if all you had to do is get the mods checked to pass the sniffer to get a exempt number and life would be dandy. but cali is all about the money, and if it can make a buck off a couple people who mod their cars, then it will. if california really cared about clean air and its people, wed all be in electric cars years ago, and we wouldnt have to wait till there was a 100 count death toll on roads before they turned them into interstates. like i said, most modified cars done right CAN pass the sniffer easily, its the visual part that will make or break em, and unless you have a smog shop hookup or a place that wouldnt know a front mount from a radiator, youre gonna have to stick it back to stock under the hood every 2 years.

lol umm Evo's are AWD......
but yeah, IMO they are pretty ugly, it takes alot for me to like an Evo, otherwise its just a 4dr econobox with a better front end and big spoiler compared to its base counterpart (the standard lancer).
i couldnt see paying 25k for used or 35k for a new one when i could get a used 03/04 for 25k that has more potential right out of the box.
both cars are awesome in their own rights however. if i lived elsewhere where weather conditions were less than favorable, or if i had snow, i might steer to the Evo, where it can be plenty fast and still useful for the DD, Cobra+weather conditions are not a good combo.

Brought it back form the dead. Both are great cars i have a evo right now and use to have a 98 cobra. I love the evo and is cheap to make fast mine is pushing 316 whp for about 1,300 and 375 at the engine. I really want a 03 cobra now though i have been trying to sell my evo for one. If i end up deeping the evo i will just have to save up and get one in about 3-4 years when i can afford it. They still cost a arm and a leg any one know where i should look to try and get one thanks i love the cobras. If u have bad weather or twisties EVO for highway and nice weather COBRA all the way

^ thats true but the 03 cobra is no cube monster, if anything it has a small v8. its the potential for the dollar and the fact that overall its cheaper to work on that most since it has a huge list of parts that can be found from the base model.

What mods do you have?
lol a 4.6L 281ci motor isnt exactly the epitome of displacement.
to an extent the replacement for displacement is boost, which is false-displacement. again, to an extent. obviously Boost+Displacement would be the ultimate goal, big cubes and big boost for making a big cube motor an even bigger cubed motor.
i think the factor for false displacement was every time you double atmospheric pressure, you increase the engine's displacement factor by half or more. So a 2.0L @ 14.7psi has roughly the same power characteristics as a 3.0L naturally aspirated, and so on and so forth. IE a 4.6L at 14.7psi has the same power characteristics as a naturally aspirated 6.9L. however being that boost does effect the powerband greatly (also dependent on boost source and Volumetric Efficiency of said motor) this is just a general estimate.

youre right the 281ci isnt exactly "huge" in fact its very small for a V8 but im sure that the 2.0L I4 in the evo doesn't come close to that much displacement. therefore the potential for horsepower/torque is greater in the cobra right?

^^ yes. but I have seen 700rwhp 4bangers. 700+ hp is more easily achieved with v8.

is it though?
i can make 700whp reliably with a DSM (including purchase price of vehicle) cheaper than just mods alone to make even 650whp on my Cobra.
i know its gonna stir the pot but seriously, its really not that difficult to make power with factory boosted vehicles.

Yeah, you can add forced induction to anything and it makes a huge difference. An Evo has its place but it is a pretty small niche. Don't get me wrong, one of my good friends has one and it is fun but damn is it hard to be truly respected in one. We'll ride in my Mustang and get stares and lots of good attention but when we are in his Evo driving the same way, we get more one finger salutes than I can count.

i guess its different on the west coast. More people mod Evo's or factory turbo cars on this side of the states than any other car. other than a handful of Mustangs/Maros/Vettes, theres a bigger following for the turbo guys. Ill run into two modded Evo's before i ever find even one Mustang with mods.
our last huge central valley meet the turbo cars outnumbered the domestic V8 crowd 3 to 1. the fastest car that night was probably the KB Cobra (even with tune issues), but there wasnt a turbo car there that wasnt decently modded (though all evo's were on the stock turbo which i thing is good to like 400-450hp, and a few wrx were on the sti turbo/tmic setup), but the KB Cobra guy has spent upwards of $10k on his setup and only put down 640whp (now conservatively/reliably tuned for like 550whp by a different shop)
people randomly flip off your buddy? dunno what thats about, on this side of the coast, people get shot doing that shit. you have to usually piss someone off to make them do that sort of stuff, maybe your evo buddy is a crappy driver?
Still though, Evo vs Cobra is easily the Cobra. Im not to much of a fan of the Evo's looks, and aside from a bit of a different awd system, its just a DSM that costs more, has 4 doors and has a warranty (if new).

i know you can dump alot of money into any car and make it faster than it has any buisness being. but back to square 1: stock evo vs stock cobra= cobra wins.

I agree. Cobra is better looking, better name, better power, not there on corner carving though.
As for the flipping off issue. That's odd because here in NY, the finger might as well be a standard greeting. It really doesn't take much for any form of a good ol' "F- You Buddy" but it also isn't such a horrible thing where it will ruin your day or mean a death sentence.
Besides the cultural differences between the coasts, I was trying to say that not many people like import tuners except for import tuners. They tend towards gawdy looks (ie, ricers with horrible paint jobs and that spoiler on the Evo) and an annoyingly loud and high pitched sound as opposed to the classic good looks of a muscle car with the sweet sweet rumble of a V8

Yeah totally opposite here (unless i just know the good crowd of "import tuners"). Unless its a show car, the trend is more towards clean looks, deep exhaust tones, and more power. I rarely see riced out cars, or the "civic with intake/fart can beating a ZO6" mentality, most people that did that either grew out of the culture or grew into better cars and out of being into ricer stuff and into nicer stuff. Most of the Civic/honduh guys i still frequent with went into DSM's and then onto Evo or STi's as they moved on from minimum wage jobs to higher paying jobs. One has a supercharged S2K but thats about it for people i know that are still or were into honduh's.
Most of the V8 guys are more ricer than the import guys (Save for the few locals i know from SVT/Ca-Mustang). I heard the guy at Kragens say his 89 5.0 beats LS1's all day with the K&N and flomasters. Riiiiiiight, if the LS1 is running on 6 cylinders.
Still though, stock for stock, Cobra > Evo. And really, they were both comparable in terms of purchase price, i think 03/04 Cobras were like what, 40-45K$ out the door, ive heard of people paying $40K for EvoMR's.
