i wrecked a toyota supra here a few months back and now i have a v-6 99 mustang ( 3.8 auto ). the power difference is crazy and i wanted to just modify the heck out of the v6 but i rather modify on top of the v-8 any day. ive been researching a lot about engines but i still got a while to go. what i want to do is drop a roush crate engine in the car, but i dont know what all i need to go with that and what all up-grades i will need to do to the car also. i want a short block but as far as that goes im still trying to figure out the pro's and cons of that compared to the long block. im not gonna start till mid-march so any help till then is deeply appriciated.

If want a whole new engine, get a V6 crate engine from super six or RPM-Mustang. You can get a 4.2L or 4.3L crate engine from them and build up from there. A number of guys here are running their engines or internals and are pushing 300+ NA and some much higher with power adders. You could even just go the rotating assembly route and save about 4k (compared to a V8 crate) and get the 300ish mark for just 2k I believe.

To do a V8 swap into a V6, you are really better off getting a V8 and selling the V6. You will need the engine (obviously right lol), rear end, suspension, computer, fuel, exhaust, probably new motor mounts, front K member, bellhousing that mates your tranny to your V8, and probably a number of other things I can't think of right now....and who knows, maybe I have list too much. There is a thread here about this...or maybe 2...if I can find it I will put a link here.

In the mean time, I am sure others will chime in on this.

Ya it would be way cheaper to get a GT. I say just supercharge the v-6, & put gears in till it blows , then rebuild the sixer. The Blower & gears, will cure your need for speed. (for a while) or you can save the cash & sell the sixer for a GT.

First off, the term "short block" refers to simply a complete block with rotating assembly (crank, rods, pistons). A "long block" is simply a short block with heads already bolted on. Some places include the cam as part of the "long block" while others do not. So they really don't have any pros/cons other than the fact that it may be slightly cheaper to buy a long block from somewhere than to buy a short block from one place and heads from another.

I would definitely agree that if you want a V8, you're better off selling the V6 and buying a GT. I don't know a lot about what's required to swap from V6 to modular V8, but the things I do know are enough to make me think it's not worth it (rear-end, tranny, ECU, wiring, K-member...).

Lastly, the V6 is capable of making power, especially with a 4.2 and a blower or turbo.

Yea, the v8 will net you more power for your money and has a bigger aftermarket. But for a relatively small amount of cash you can build yourself a reliable 250 hp v6 to hold you over till you can get a v8. Or who knows, by the time you got your v6 built, she may have grown on you and you'll wanna turbo it! The last link has some vids on the guy's turbo'd stang. The thing is fast and sounds great imho.
