I know this has been beat to death, but i have to ask Anyway What will be needed to swap a 4.6 into a v6 shell. Before you start in on me as you can see by my title i have a wrecked 2001 gt(BTW insurance wouldn't cover it, long story ). I am aquiring a v6 probably a 99. what exactly has to be swapped over? I live on a Air force base so i have access to lifts, engine stands etc. etc.. Also how long do you think this would take? I have done engine swaps before(FWD cars only) and i am mechanically inclined. My friend has done full restorations on cars and he will be helping me. Any input geatly appreciated. Thanks.

You will need:
engine
transmission
driveshaft
rear end
suspension
wiring
gauge panel
computer
pretty much anything you can pull off your car and put on the v6 shell will do you good.

What about the radiator, mines is FUBAR. Also is it easier to remove the engine from the bottom of from the top?

Yeh, you will need a radiator also...pretty much, anything that supports the engine in any way will need to be changed.

Why? The only thing damaged is the front end. The engine through back end is all good. Me and about 3 other guys are going to tackle it. I am doing all the work myself so no labor cost. The car is completely intact, heck it still starts and drives, so what am i missing as far as cost?

Why not just swap over the front clip from the v6 and get ahold of another radiator?

I know you want the V8, I'm saying replace all the stuff that's messed up on your GT with parts from the V6...unless the frame is bent or something like that. But, if you're buying a V6 to swap to, why not just swap parts from it, then part out the rest of the car.

I meant to edit that, didn't get it until later, anyway yeah the frame has shifted. It would need to be aligned(hit something pretty solid) anyway that is why i want to do the swap.

O ok, well about all I can say is take everything from the GT you can salvage and put it on the V6 chassis, like as far as the drivetrain, you will pretty much need to transfer everything over.

I don't think that the wiring harness has been mentioned, I am sure you will need that too. I dont' envy you the job at all, but try and enjoy it! As you can see, My GT hit something pretty solid too, I recommend that any Mustang convertables get heavy duty (not light bar) Roll bars installed for their health, my back will never be the same.

Yeah I am a Aircraft Electrician in the Air Force, plus I worked at Circuit City some 6 odd years in the stereo installation department, so wiring is probably the easy part for me. Thanx for all the info, I will let you know when I get started a post some pics.

Can you get a factory service manual from Ford? I need it for torque values and procedures and info.

Yeh, you can order a new manual from ford. I'd recommend getting a hayne's manual or the equivalent however, better detailed and more information for cheaper.

I was in the Air Force for a little over 3 years in the early 70s, got out on a disablity, sort of a nervous breakdown thing. I am 100% service connected now, have been for about 10 years. I was a supply person, warehouse, after hours support, repairable parts monitor, WRSK kits, etc.
