Ford motor to make mustang based lincoln

DETROIT - Ford Motor Co. is considering making a Mustang-based sporty Lincoln coupe by as early as 2009, according to Automotive News.

A Ford insider told Inside Line the coupe is still in "concept form" and has not yet received formal program approval, however.

The Lincoln would have a unique exterior and interior but share underpinnings with the Mustang, which was redesigned for the 2005 model year. Lincoln is in the process of rebuilding its brand, with products such as the 2006 Zephyr sedan, which is designed to appeal to a younger audience.

Ford has said it expects to produce at least 192,000 Mustangs this year at its Mazda joint-venture plant in Flat Rock, Mich.

What this means to you: A no-brainer way to heap some of Mustang's glory on the dowdy Lincoln brand.

I'm not too thrilled about a lincoln based on the mustang platform, but a new mercury cougar would be flippin' sweet. Sequential taillights are awesome. Not too many frills, but something that would offer a little more luxury to cater to a more refined taste.
What name could be brought back for the lincoln brand anyway?

Ford Lincoln Mercury is the name of the company. Mustang/Cougar were together early on and then it was the Mustang/Capri. So what if it is either a Mercury or Lincoln badging. Just does not bother me at all. Actually FORD needs something or the Mercury Lincoln line will go bye bye.

I think they should bring it back as the Cougar. Maybe a little more luxurious version of the Mustang with slightly different bumpers or something to distinguish. A little boost in HP would also help justify the extra cost.

Here is a little more info on the restyling...and it looks like it is going to be a 2010 version and not 2009. (Towards the bottom)
