With the smashing success of the 2005 (S197) Mustang redesign and the overwhelming excitement surrounding the 2007 Shelby GT500, Stang fanatics need not wait long for the next phase in the pony car’s legacy.
So what can be expected? The ideas are likely to stay in the ballpark at this point, but one thing is for sure; the changes will still capture the essence of American muscle. With budgets closing in and new designs restricted as a result, the likely outcome is going to be an enhanced version of the model currently available. In short, the car will retain that which made the recent revamp popular; hints at heritage.
Many fans of the Ford Mustang predict an evolution to come in turn just as it happened in the 1960s; expectations for the ’69-’70 appearance abound, as the Generation Y crowd is the next market to target. Sharper, more modern lines are expected all-around, while the front fascia will likely have a contemporary shape with ominous eyes slanted forward.
The hoofbeat in the concept Pony will undoubtedly continue to be powered by the 4.6-liter engine variants (the 3-valve, 4-valve, and blown applications). There will be a new twist with these new engines, however; displacement on demand technology is expected, in hopes of allowing more economy into the concept of harnessed power. Rumors of the 5.4-liter, 3-valve engine have even been tossed about. The base engine for the 2009 concept is slated to be the 3.5-liter DOHC V-6, estimated for upwards of 260hp and a much smoother rev pattern than the 4.0-liter truck engine it will replace.
On the inside, fans of the S197 Mustang will quickly notice something is gone—the “My Color” instrument panel will not be returning. The most recent (2005) interior overhaul received positive notes on fit, finish, and overall design quality and will hopefully continue the trend. The concept is poised for a more “fun” approach in hopes of attracting a more youthful generation. More retro touches are expected and some conjecture about an interior such as the one in the BMW Mini Cooper S will serve as inspiration.
