GT Mufflers vs. V6 Mufflers?

Any difference in the GT and V6 mufflers? Found a guy here locally that's done axle-backs on his '05 GT and is offering me his stockers for a good price ($30). Any advantage of these over just adding a second stock muffler? I want duals out the back, but I'd like to keep the sound pretty tame (I leave early for work, got to keep the neighbors happy, they already hate my bike! LOL!).

well, from what i hear, the stock exhaust on 05+ V6's is real restictive and one of the top mods for these cars is either duals or bigger single exhuast.....along with intake and tuning.

i'd go for it..........hell, its only $30..........if i could score a dual exhuast system for that cheap, i'd get it

for 30 dollars take them, you can decide if you like them or not and go from there. Cant beat that price you can always sell them on ebay and turn over profit~

Got my GT mufflers installed yesterday, the GT Bumper cover the day before that, I paid around 80 bucks shipped for my Mufflers, not totally new but close to it. About 200 and another 100 for shipping it for the GT bumper cover, and 228 at the muffler shop also 40 bucks to swap the bumper covers. Gave the body guy my stock cover. Stock muffler was left at the muffler shop. They sound good, a bit louder than the stock ones, not loud at all at idle, but when you rev it you definitely hear it then.

See, I'd like to do this to my car too. To just get something louder, but not TOO much louder. Anyone have any suggestions on what kind of muffler to look for...or anyone from the San Antonio, TX area that knows where I can get a good deal.
I just always thought it would be hard to get a good sound for a v6...

Well, my cheap source for the mufflers dried up on me. Turns out his GT is on a lease, and his wife figured it be best to be able to return the car to stock when the time comes to give it back. Makes sense to me. There's a few sets running on Ebay right now, and it looks like you can get them from Saleen too, so I should still be able find a pair reasonably priced.

Did I see somewhere that you (or the muffler shop) just cut out your stock rear panel for the second muffler? Seems like a cheap and easy way to go! Are the hangers for the second muffler on the car already, or did you have to get some parts?

No they aren't there, had to order them from ford dealer, cost around 100 bucks just for those. You can cut that plastic panel, but it won't look the same or as good as a GT bumper cover would. There is a guy on ebay that sells all that stuff, he is out of MI, I think he buys in bulk from saleen, calls himself a wholesale company. Has all the colors, front and rear bumper covers, GT grills with lights, GT mufflers, etc.

Oh, and GT mufflers look like the stock one, but they DO NOT sound the same, and true dual is much better than 2 y pipes.

I like the thought of true duals, but unless you wringing the last ounce of performance from the 4.0, can it really make that much difference? Especially at the risk of losing some low end power? I keep thinking back to when 5.0 magazine tested the Procharger on the 4.0. They didn't bother changing anything on the exhaust (stock maifolds, etc.) and got 321 rwhp out of it. Seems like a single flows pretty good on this car!
I've seen the guy on Ebay, and I don't know how he sells that stuff so cheap. He must know someone at Saleen, since they quoted me $800 for the GT takeoff set, as long as I ordered 2 sets at a time! LOL! Occassionally, he sells just a rear cover alone, but it usually sells for $149 by itself. I'm keeping my eyes open for a deal, since I really don't want to cut the stock cover.

Come on guys this is getting crazy. There is absolutely no way you are going to feel or hear the difference running a V6 through the two GT Mufflers as apposed to running a second similar muffler and Y pipe. This engine does not breath enough to fill the system even at WOT ( wide open throttle) you are talking a what a 55 mm single throttle body? As far as mounts for a $100 that is rediculus, its a piece of steel welded to the muffler and bolted to the frame, if your shop can't do this whole job for less than $200 with tips and cutting the thin plastic vallance they are ripping you off. As far as the look I just snapped another shot, check it out on the attached link. If I were going for looks I would just add the SS (street scenes) lower gt valance ad on and it would be cheaper than a GT replacement. Save your money and spend it on other mods for the car, wheels , suspension or performance. $648. for duals is just rediculus.

To each his own. Rick just has a thing about doing stuff the right way the first time, regardless of cost b/c for the most part you get what you pay for. Not saying there's anything wrong with your car, but to each his own is all I'm gonna say.

I tend to agree with you about the flow of the stock system. I'm sure it's a bit more restrictive than a more open muffler, but to the point of needing real duals? On this motor, not likely. You definitely don't want to kill the low end power in this application, and with true duals, you're taking a chance on that. Too big a diameter of pipe is all it takes.

Personally, after giving it some more thought, I'm leaning towards the Magnaflow 16605 dual exit system now. I don't want to make a GT clone out of it (bodywork, etc.) and I really don't want it to sound like a GT either (why have the sound if you can't possibly back it up?), so why not make it sound like what it is, a good performing OHC narrow angle V6. Now, if I can just get the shop that did my 240 to give me a decent quote for the 'Stang!

Do what suits you best! I feel no low end power loss, I do think I feel an all around gain, especially in the mid range. I am happy with it, and mine doesn't sound like a GT, just a good performing OHC v6.

Wouldn't by chance have a sound clip, would you? That's the main reason I keep flip-flopping over pipes. You never know what it's going to sound like until you fire it up the first time.

No, sorry, no sound clips. It isnt' loud at idle at all, not even a lot more than stock, at higher rpms you can hear it, going down the road you do hear it, but not really loud either.

Hey guys, it seems like every time Ford makes a change of any magnitude
people get into a serious debate on modding specs. Well, I'm here to tell ya,
AIN'T NOTHIN" CHANGED except the new motor has a few extra cubes.
It also moves a little bit more air, and has a bit more total airflow potential
if the OHC heads have the same or better flow potential as the SPI (99-04)
stuff. That being said, I can say this:

1. For near stock V6 setups, 2.25" true duals (w/crossover if you please)
will be nearly the perfect size. Near stock being boltons, gears and a tune.

2. Engine mods will need to be assessed on a case-by-case basis, but most
HCI swaps (IMO) could likely use 2.5" true duals.

3. Most power adder setups will be able to use 2.5" duals, over ~350 RWHP
will likely be starting to benefit from the 3" dual pipe sizes.

A general ROT (rule of thumb):

2.25" duals good to ~300 BHP or ~260 RWHP (manual) ~240 RWHP (auto)
2.50" duals good to ~400 BHP or ~360 RWHP (manual) ~340 RWHP (auto)
3.00" duals good for most anything over the above figures.

There is some overlap in the HP capabilities, depending on crossover and
style, and power adder type (if used). The above is a general NA and
centrifugal SC application chart, turbos can push more HP thru a given
size. I believe Matthew Neuharth is getting his near-600 RWHP thru a
single 3" down pipe!
