A lot of directions say you can do it by hand with a breaker bar, but I found that is impossible. You will need an impact wrench to break it loose.

Put the car in 5th gear and have a few guys standing around to take turns on it. I installed one of these on a 2000 GT sunday...we got it off by hand, but by God it's a major PITA.

well the breaker bar/leverage didnt work. had the car in 5th and it was moving it with the ebrake on.

so we got out the trusty air tools. the bolt laughed at it and said "no bitch".

so we got the air gun. but it wouldnt fit, so we had to take off the fan shroud and assembly to make room. the bolt laughed at that as well, which is when i came on here and posted up.

well i did some more searches on other forums, and heard a loud "WOOHOO" from the garage. low and behold, the bolt finally gave in after a good 2 full minutes of constant impacting.

pullies are installed, yada yada yada. i didnt feel much of anything really, then again, i dont expect much of anything from boltons. mightve gained some torque down low cause the car felt a bit more balsy when going from 1st to 2nd at low rpm's at WOT. feels the same from 2-5k. 5k+ is the same old engine starving for air feel that us 2Vers must deal with.

Auto zone rents free harmonic balancer pullers, i spend over a hour trying to get mine off by beating it with a rubber hammer and it didnt budge, but i got it off in like 10 minutes with the harmonic balancer puller.

for future reference

I saw somebody who actually used a breaker bar, extension, and jack

they put the jack under the extension and got the bolt off that way

that was the easy part. i already have a pulley puller, that i know how to use. and being i had air tools, i assumed the crank bolt was going to take mere seconds, and the whole job was going to be cake. stupid bolt. other than that bolt, its pretty easy. the new pulley(with old balancer attached) slid in no problem, and yes, i remembered to sillycon the key groove.

Also, you can't get the old pulley off with 2 arm puller, we finally gave up on that and bought a 3 arm puller.

Alot of you guys mentioned a breaker bar,(for future reference) if you don't have access to air tools what you need is a cheater bar, 1 inch dia iron pipe about 12 to 24 inches long. Works like a charm! I am lucky to have a old condemned Aircraft torque wrench that has a 2000 ftlbs setting on it with a 1/2 inch drive on the end of it. It's about 36 inches long. It can remove anything as long as the sockets holds.LOL

i have a 4' long 2.5" dia pipe leftover from my custom fmic install, that i stuck on the end of my 1/2" driver and it did absolutely nothing but move the car forward, even in 5th gear it was moving a good 1/2" when we put strain on it. it was seriously stuck on there, prolly the most stuck-in bolt ive ever crossed paths with, usually my air tools make short work of almost everything.

sometimes patience and letting the air ratchet do its job prevails over brute strength.

lol, GROW SOME NUTS.... hahaha, did I say that? I know when we were taking apart my old 4.6 in my truck... I was turning over the engine while removing it... and after the engine locked up (I know, probably not the best...) I did end up busting the shit out of a knuckle.. but I got that damn bolt. I forget how big the cheater bar was.... but wow... yeah. I split the skin on my thumb down to the bone when the bolt finally did move.
