since my car is wrecked i've been using my dad's 4-Runner. The check engine light came on and I know the car has been serviced recently. Is the dealership the best place to take it to have the codes checked?
I know some places charge a crazy amount just to turn off the check light, which i've already done once by disconnecting the battery.
I think it's been mentioned in another thread that some places might scan it for free. Any help would be appreciated.

If it's OBD-II, places like Advance Auto and Auto Zone will scan it for free.

well autozone didn't have any of the scanners to rent out and it sounds like they don't do it for the customers, you just have to rent the tool. I went to two other places and they charge $90.00 just to retrieve the code and $140.00 to tell me what the code means. I can buy the damn obd2 scanner for $130.00 at Kragen.
Not sure what i'm gonna do.

oh yea I also wanted to know what that website is where I can look up the code and see what it means in case I just pay them to retrieve it for me. I know someone posted it once before and didn't know if it worked for just Ford vehicles.

well it wasn't free for me. I almost got a code scanner but then realized I don't 100% know what I'm doing. Sure i could get a PO172 but then I don't know why the O2 sensor is fugged up. I didn't want to throw parts at it... Like I always say, there's a way that works and there's the correct way.
Anyways got it checked out and it's exactly what I thought it would be. Need an "air/fuel ratio sensor", clean the MAF, and new spark plugs. They wanted $170.00 just for labor on installing the sensor.
so needless to say i'll be doing some tune up stuff tomorrow instead of spending $625.00 which was the grand total the shop wanted to charge....rat bastards...
