i'd bet not more than 10 on the v6, not more than 25 on the gt and not more than 40 on the cobra (if it's still around)
hopefully we'll get a factory special stang (mach 1, bullitt, boss, etc) around then too

If they go to the rumored Duratec 3.5 V6, then the V6 power level should be quite a bit higher than that. Closer to 240 or so.

power isnt going to go any higher is my guess. with 3 bucks a gallon this summer, unless they figure out how to get a lot of power out of a car that does well on gas.

I think they are gonna pull a GM and figure out how to shutdown cylinders on the V8.
Maybe the Duratec for the V6.

cmon now, when was the last time you heard of someone buying a sports/muscle car or anything of that sort for gas mileage? They have HP/Tq numbers memorized not the EPA's mileage in city/highway

I'm just predicting a couple of '03 Cobras will go up for sale in a few months or they will be parked in place of a 4cyl.
Not many people will be willing to spend a $100 every week to fill up.

no way, if anyone sells their cobra due to gas prices, they didnt like the car enough and arent worthy of it anyways. seriously, if you sell your cobra cause of a weak reason like mileage, youre a fake ass flamer and probably just got the car to fit in with the rest of em.
most people that have a powerful car also have a shitty dd to get to and from work 90% of the time, and use the other for nice days, weekends, etc. thats the smartest way to do it, and you can find crap beaters for 1-2k(crx, for example) that get great mileage, and still are cheap enough not to hamper the money you spend on the nice car making it nicer.

look at past trends
V6:
98-99......40hp
04-05......20hp
GT:
95-96......20 or so by switching to the 4.6
98-99......40hp
04-05......40hp
so my guess is that the 6 will jump to 230 and the 8 will go to ~340 or so while the cobra (if around) will have 450-500

Yeah what about those new V6 engines that I saw pics of? They had something like 240 horse power or some crap. All I can say is, if an Altima V6 engine can pump out 260, why the fuck can't Ford do the same thing.

Actually, I know a number of people selling, or getting ready to sell, their cobras and lightnings because of gas prices.
However, I do agree with your statements....

Why should they put more money into a more hp engine when the Altima is not a competitor of the V6 Mustang and the v6 Mustang already out sells everything in its class?

look at the price tags. a V6 altima aint nowhere close to a V6 mustang. you can get a 06 V6 for 22k, you cant get a V6 altima for under 25.
and at this point, the 05+ stang is really selling and the aftermarket for it has grown faster in 2 years than the 5.0 did in 10. just open any car magazine, and youre going to see countless 05+'s being modded in some way, shape or form. hell, its Foose's favorite car right now, hes done what, 3 super badass ones, hasnt touched a fox or a SN95 in his life.

So it's obvious that ford should plop it's v6 that it has in the futura (I mean Fuzion) that makes 260bph. But for the V8 I personally say keep the 4.6 in either 3v or 4v form hopefully with a 30-40 hp increase and for the upper trim model maybe use this... What ever it ends up being. Fords new big bore
But whether or not they release it is the question, as well as will they keep their heads out of their rears and put it in the stang right away?
I hope this new engine stays with Fords trend towards OHC's and maybe work in VCT and Displacement on demand.

Nissan/Infinity use's this engine in several models so the cost of performance per dollar ratio is worth it. Ford only uses it's 4.0 liter from the mustang in only a few models , their not going to invest in a small segment drivetrain. Hell, look at the 5.0 Liter they basically stayed the same 225 h.p rating from (87-92) re-rated to 205 h.p. in 93'.

It needs to be at least enough to match the upcoming Camaro's that they will be compared to, what ever that will be, both V-6 and V-8 models. Last time they were matched up GM had them beat except for the 03/04 Cobra's. Not ever 99/01 Cobra were as fast as LS1 Camaro's and Trans Am's.

if Ford wants to continue to sell lots of Stangs they HAVE to compete with Chevy and Dodge , 300hp just is not enough when the competition is pushing 400+ one good thing though is the Maro and Chally are OBESE so 350hp+ should give them a run for there money assuming Ford keeps the weight down things should get interesting indeed waiting patiently for NOV , by the way Ford has a new website up with a countdown clock...
