I have 17x9 in rims with 255/40ZR17 Yoko tires. I have not been happy with these tires since I put them on and after less then 20,000 miles, they are wearing and it is time for a new set. Any suggestions on a good brand that is not ridiculously expensive?

Well, I don't know what rediculously expensive is, but I like Nitto 555s (the regular street tire not the drag radial). They are 164 each for 275s on discounttiredirect.com (which you should be putting 275s on that 9" rim). If you join svtperformance, or at least contact him through there, I believe there is a slight discount...at least there was a few months back. It is in the vendors section on the site anyhow.
I had these on my GT for 30k-ish miles with no problems. They still had about 70% tread left, but only because all 4 spent time on the rear of the car.

275/40/17 Yokahoma AVS es100s. I have them they are a good price and last a good long time IF you take care of them. I have nearly 40k on mine and they still have tread.

I would second the AVS E1000's, even though it appears that it may be what you already have...
I've gotten plenty of miles out of mine. I have nearly 20k on the fronts and they still have plenty of tread.

alot of how a tire does depends on how it is treated. This means alignments, rotations, keeping the air set right, the right size tire on the right size rim, driving conditions, burn outs etc etc.

I thought the AVS es100 was a good tire also, that's why I bought them in the first place. Seems odd that they wore so fast.

If you drive aggresive you'll wear down any tire before 20k. I'm right around the 20k mark on my last set of tires, after an autox or two and spinning going into second they are getting pretty worn down. It doesn't help any if you drive around corners very spirited, that'll wear down tires pretty fast.

i have 275/40/17 Evo-Z tires made by kelly... almost identical to the Goodyear Eagle F-1... great tire for cheap, can buy a whole set of 4, for 484 shipped. Very sticky tire... i love them.

Remember 255/40ZR17 Yoko are Z rated tires. Even if you are mildly agressive in the corners you are leaving rubber behind. If you are a agressive driver make sure your car is aligned and rotate the tires more often. You could also step down to a H rated tire and get a less sticky tire and they will wear slower. Most people really never need more than a H rated tire anyway on the street anyway.
S 112 mph
T 118 mph
U 124 mph
H 130 mph
V 149 mph
W 168 mph
Y 186 mph

you do not need to go over 100mph sorry... its stupid on the street... if you go to the track and trap more than that then get a tire in that range but thats the only reason I would.... unless they simply dont make the tire in another given speed rating.

Thanks for the info guys, I understand about the speed ratings and all, and I agree, problem is I can't seem to find a 275/40/17 in any speed rating other than Z. Also, I can't rotate because I have the deep dish 10.5's on the rear. So it's either stay with a smaller tire (with a lower speed rating) or deal with buying fronts more often.
