what is a good tire size for 17x9 cobra rims?? 235/45/17 or 245/45/17 which would fit better? and which size would look nicer?

neither of those will work, for a 9 inch wide rim in a 17 inch size you need a 275/40/17 tire. Any smaller is to small unless you like the look of stretched tires over a rim and curb rash along with poor wearing characteristics.

Actually 245 45 17's are put on 17X9 from the factory and some like Bridgestone/Firestone and Dunlop put hardened ridge which protect the rim from rash. But as Spector said 275 40 17 will work. I personally would use 255 40 17 all around or 255 40 17 in the front and 275 40 17 in the back

so i should go w/ either 255/40/17 or 275/40/17. but what about 45 instead of 40?? will that look stupid or will it look about the same?

The difference between the 255 40 and the 245 45 is almost zero. it is not even noticeable. As a matter of fact I have 255 40 17 in the feont and 245 45 17 in the back because the last time I needed tires they did nt have 4 of either tire so they stuck 2 of each on the car. You can not tell!!! so if you are looking to have bigger tires in the back either 255 40 or 245 45 will do in the front and go with 275 40 17 in the back

I personally have 245/45ZR17s in the front and 275/40ZR17 in the rear. Works VERY well. Also, I'mnot sure if you all know this but the first number is measured in millimeters. So 275mm across. And there are 25.4mm per inch, so that makes it about 11" of rubber across!! Also, the second number is called the profile percentage. If you want the formulaon how to calculate it, i can get it for you.

Not in the back. but it would look better if you had spacers in the back 1" would due. In the front you tires will scrub in the tight turns. I suggest you not put spacers on the front spindles. The weight being applied outboard of the factory setup can prove to cause excessive wear and stress on the steering components and linkage. It will also cause tires to wear uneven and create poor steering characteristics.
Here is a tire calculator to determine what tire size you are looking for

In the front I would just go with 245's in the front like I did and 275 in the rear. the tire height for each is virtually the same and it looks good, and you won't have to worry about rubbing.

You may want to take a look at someone else's car who has 245s on a 9 wide wheel before you decide to go that route. They're pretty narrow.
If it was me... I'd put 275/40/17s all around on 17x9 wheels. This way you can rotate them, you don't have to worry about curb rash (as much), and it, IMHO, looks much better.
On my fox, I've got 255/40/17s on the front and 275/40/17s on the back. The 255s, in my opinion, are a little narrow for the rim. Some like that look. I personally like the sidewall to either appear straight or have a slight bulge. Another important note is that some tire manufacturers measure tire widths differently. For example, the Yokohama's I have are quite wide for their size. The 255s would be even more narrow if that wasn't the case.
Also, with a 255 you can't get exactly the right sidewall height. I run a 255/40 which is notably shorter than than a 275/40. This actually doesn't look too bad (gives it a nice raked stance), but I still think the tire is just too narrow for a 9" wheel.
If I ever put tires on those rims again, I'm going to run 275s all around. Yes, they will rub slightly at full lock, especially on a fox. Your car won't be near as bad. It's not a big deal though, because you get used to when they rub and just don't turn the steering wheel that far. Problem solved.

I have 17x9 rims up front with 255/40/17 Yoko's (AVS ES100). They look nice BUT are not wide enough, I have the curb rash to prove it. Go with 275's all around, you will be glad you did.

245's are not the reason you have curb rash. You have scrubbed curbs to get curb rash. Dont blame the tire for your curbing the rims!!!!!
I personally think 275's look odd on the front and you will also limit your steering when turning because they will scrub!!!
In my 28 years of driving I have only curb rashed a rim once when I was in no condition to drive. Luckly it was a stock steel rim on a Caprice Classic.
WATCH OUT FOR CURBS!!!!

Go with 275s... a 245 tires IS TOO NARROW!!! Corey I cant believe you of all people are telling him a 245 is the correct size. I had a 265 on my 9" rim and it was even too narrow. Saleen puts 265's on their wheels stock. Go with 275s, its worth it.... and it does have to do with the tire that causes curb rash. If the tires too narrow, it has no protection to the lip of the rim... thus causing rash if you accidently get too close to a curb. Personally Id rather spend the extra 20 bucks per tire to get the 275's then have to buy new rims cause I rash them up.
GO WITH 275s!!!

Dude Ford puts 245's on 17X9 rims. I also told him 255's but it is up to him. Why do the rims need protection???? BAD DRIVING??? I think so
How about staying off the damn curbs JESUS CHRIST!!!! You guys are bad as my wife scraping curbs!!!! Hell you guys need curb feelers!!!
I also hate tires so big up front they scrub in tight turns!!! Just like lowering your car so low you cant get a floor jack under it. You guys actually get the puny little sissor jack and raise it enough to get a floor jack under it. That is absurd!!! BY GOD
