A Canadian's wish for a Mustang

Hello everyone. I'm Bill, I'm Canadian, and I am looking to purchase a Mustang...

Up to this point I have never owned a Mustang. The following is a list of what I have owned:

1977 Toyota Corolla SR5 2 door fastback (exhaust and engine mods)
1985 Toyota Corolla
1986 Mazda 323LX (replaced 1.6L with 2.0L from 626)
1988 Mazda 626 Turbo (did some exhaust/turbo mods)
1990 Nissan Maxima
1991 Mazda 323
1991 Mazda RX-7 (non turbo with exhaust mods)
1997 Mazda B2300 (Ford Ranger)
1998 Mazda Protege
2000 Daewoo Leganza (pacific rim GM)(current work vehicle)
2002 Honda Civic SiR
2003 Mazda Protege5
2005 Kia Sedona (current family hauler)

As you can see, I haven't had any real fun since the RX-7 or the other modified cars, nor have I owned a piece of American muscle. However, after a test drive in a 2005 Mustang GT, I wanted one. Then reality struck, and I realized that I could not afford a new one.

I am now looking at the 1999 to 2004 Mustang models. Not only do they fit in my price range, but I like the look of them over the previous ones (except for the SVO from the early to mid eighties - turbo is kind of appealing too).

My dilemna is whether or not to choose the V8 (older, upper range in price, higher mileage) or the V6 (newer, lower range in price, lower mileage)...

Hopefully with everyones help, I can make a good, knowledgable decision.

With the money you save purchasing a V6, if you know what you're doing, you can make it faster than the V8.

But there's nothing that can substitute for that V8 rumble.

Welcome to the site, as a v6 owner I must say I am very happy with my car, it's paid off lol. If I had bought a GT I'd probably still be making a car payment. It's more a thing of personal preference.

I have owned two v6s and now the cobra. They were all fun cars and you can enjoy any of them just as much as any other. The ONLY thing you need to think about is not what you can afford but what you want, when the best time to get it is, and what you want it to be capable of. Some want show some want go some want both etc etc so determine if your budget will allow for what you want and then go for it if it does.

Have you considered a 94-98 style mustang? You can pick up a nice 96-98 cobra (305 hp) for anywhere from 9-12k these days with good milage on them. If you look into the 99-04 GTs, theyre getting pretty cheap too... you can probably find them for 12-15k depending on mileage.

Wow, thanks for all the input... I like the look of the 99-04's better than the earlier models, but I could get into a V8 in the 94-98 for the same price as the V6 99-04. I test drove a 2002 Ford Mustang GT with 58k (kms), and I really like the sound and feel of the V8... after that, I don't think I could purchase a V6 and be happy, I think its V8 or bust now.

I will have to bide my time, and watch the market, hopefully I can secure a good one that has a good mixture of low mileage, low price, and latest model possible. Up here in the great white north, cars tend to rust, so the newer the better in most cases. (Unless someone took primo care of it)

coat the underside with that stuff that prevents rust and even stops it dead in its tracks when its starting, or even set in.

Even undercoated cars rust in the snow belt. The salt that they put on the roads finds it way into areas and rust happens. There is no avoiding it. You might could delay major rust, but rust will happen up there. Coming from western NY, the salt is ever present on the roads from fall until a few good rains in spring.

You would pretty much have to dip a car into the solution and let it soak for a bit....because that road spray has some serious abilities to seap into crevaces...

the stuff ive seen advertised is pretty darn cool. You can literally put it on top of rust and it will kill it dead in its tracks. Its like RAID for cars.

As far as v6 vs v8, it's a preference/money thing. I personally couldn't afford a v8, but others could, get the six, and whoop on the GTs for fun, haha.

test drive the 6. if you like it too then get it. you will definitely notice a power difference between your car now and the v6 but im sure it wont have the true american muscle feel yanno? i have a v6 now just because im in college and cant afford a GT. when i graduate though and have enough, im gettin an 8. i say get what you can afford.
