In what arrangement are they? One into another? All you need is one on there to be "legal." I don't think cars without cats sound bad, it's just a lot more louder and a manly sound. On a mustang I bet it would sound great. I don't know why ford would put 2 cats on one pipe and a muffler?

Because just one of the cats does not complete the catalytic process. It takes 2 of them to complete the catalyst that converts Carbon Monoxide to Carbon Dioxide. Instead of having just one large pan style as in the 70's and 80's which do to heat would become a fire hazzard so they they split the catalytic process into 2 seperate containers. There are High Flow single cats you can by that are a big improvement over the older large pan style and flow better than the current cats. Hell GT's have 6 cats

As for sound, generally a six without cats sounds bad.
Some sound ok but it all depends on the entire exhaust setup.

fun mellow tone muffler, dont run straight open mufflers. My v6 sounded fine with 40 series flowmasters, a bit ricy but not to bad~ a bit more mellow muffler would have been better IMO.

I dont have cats but I also dont have a stock motor. I have Dynomax Ultraflows which are one of the three best mufflers out there for increased flow and they DO NOT DRONE!!!

That is correct The 4.6 has 6. The 5.0 has the same setup as the 3.8

sorry to get off the subject...back to it...i say cut all the cats off and get some flowmasters or borla mufflers and if u dont like the way it sounds put the cats back on... i prefer flowmaster 40 series delta flow for a v6 because i think a orig 40 would be to high pitched and the delta flow has a deeper tone...ask some of the guys on here if they can post of send u a clip of theirs and make a decission based on that...i would send u one of mine but i got v8 with flowmaster orig 40s on mine

But Flowmasters have possible the worse flow characteristics of just about any performance muffler. So why would you not want better flow.

i think it was just 96-98 w/ 6 cats, cuz my 02 has 4
If i remember right i think i read somewhere that the stock mufflers flow better than a flow"master".

Actually Dynomax is a old school name and a lot of young kinds just stick with Flowmaster because every shop carry's them. The fact is Dynomax can be found on Vipers, Porshe and prowlers and roush until 2001. They are also found in just about any autoparts store much cheaper that just about any performance muffler out there. For example if you want loud with decent flow get Dynomax Super Turbo's. they can be had for $35 each if you shop around. If you want great flow get the Dynomax Ultraflows at about $70 each.

hey, my catalytic converters collasped, so i got mine just gutted out. It's got true duals, but it was done before i got the car, but the driver side muffler appears to be the stock one, and the passenger side one looks like another mustang muffler. it's sounds kinda wierd, kinda good, i dunno, i still dunno if i like it or not, lol, but anyway, here's 2 videos for you to hear it
