I have a v6 in my stang right now but I am looking to swap my engine out to a carb'd v8. I've been looking at building a 302 since I know it would fit but what other engines would fit in the engine bay as well? I want the simplicity of a carb'd v8 but I would also like to keep the engine as a reliable daily driver but wouldnt mind having the power when I need it. Figured I would ask in here since you guys are the v8 guys what you think would work best. Thanks.

I pesonally would put a 351w in.
An engine swap consistes of a lot more than just a new engine and harness. Especially if you are going from v6 to v8. Suspension, as well as the rear end will all need to be swapped/replaced.

Yeah my plan is to get a V8, 5 or 6 speed tranny, and and some rear end, 9 inch or something. Haven't done to much research on rear ends... Guessing my engine mounts will be different since it is a V8 but when you say engine harness what do you mean? I dont think a carbd 8 needs a computer does it? Will the 351w fit in the bay alright? Thanks.

The 351 should fit, engine mount will probobly be different.
Carbed v8's dont need computers.
You wont need a 9 inch rear a 31 spline eaton and strange axels in an 8.8 will handle just about anything
I would reccomend a tko-500/600 for a five speed tranny that can handle abuse.

8.8 will handle the power but if you know a junk yard where you can snag a 9incher for cheap I would get it. No harness is needed, no computers, the 351 will fit in there. My personal opinion is strip the engine compartment of anything that isn't needed or is just luxury just to make it easier on yourself. Personally with the sounds of your use I would get a 302. They can be built up to 350HP and run fine. 350 is more then enough for your daily fun and you'll be able to smoke the tires and kill other cars for the most part. If you're not going for full out power and you have hopes and dreams of going the full mile on your engine then stick with the 302. The power you can get out of them is great considering how much they weigh verse a 351. I only recommend a 351 if you plan on really dumping cash into the car to make it have tons of horses and just be a full out beast. Going from a v6 to a v8 your going to need to put new sprins in the front because of the added weight. Strip the car of most your unneeded electronics. New rear end, transmission, mounts and more.

you would have to do alot of work to a 9" to make it fit correctly under his car. i've seen 1200 hp applications still using the 8.8, nothing wrong with it.
if you want a daily driver though i'd stick with EFI (specially looking at these gas prices) but thats purely my opinion, you will get about 2-5 miles less with the carb, and 10-20 hp more.
im just a fan of turnkey operation.

efi has nothing to do really with how much hp you make, both do basically the same thing. EFI does it electronically and carbs do it mechanically, both can be setup for optimal hp..depends on how good your tune is on either.
I would stick with EFI for a daily driver though personally.

You can swap to a 351W but some of the parts for a 302 are a little cheaper and easier to find. I just swapped a 351W into a 4cyl hatch and it turned out great. Your best bet is to find a wrecked V8 car and get everything from it.
The 8.8 is the way to go for rear end. It bolts right in and is very strong. I went with a built C4 with a stall for the tranny but a 5 speed from a V8 car will work. EFI will get better mileage but a carb is much simpler to install. Carbs need no computer, sensors, wiring, etc.
Good luck with your swap and keep us up to date on your progress.

my 331 gets ~18 MPG highway.. (only 12-13 around town but.. I floor it so often its hard to tell) I have 3k trouble-free miles on the new motor so far.. and I've run a best of 11.81@117.2 MPH on MT ET streets... I lifted a tire off the ground too, on only a 3k RPM launch..
still using iron heads
