Corzine: Bring back 55 mph
Lower speed limit among proposals to ease pump pain
BY GREGORY J. VOLPE
GANNETT STATE BUREAU
TRENTON -- Lowering the 65 mph speed limit, incentives to reduce the use of personal cars and allowing self-service gas stations are on Gov. Jon S. Corzine's agenda to respond to recent spikes in gasoline prices.
On Thursday, Corzine announced his plan to conserve gas and protect consumers in the wake of gas prices that, according to AAA, have risen nearly 80 cents this year to a statewide average of $2.87 for regular unleaded.
Corzine's administration is examining whether to reduce the 65-mph speed limit to 55 mph to conserve gas, but the governor said, "I think there's some dispute about the effectiveness of that."
Within a week, fuel-efficient hybrid cars will be allowed in the New Jersey Turnpike's high-occupancy vehicle, or HOV, lanes, which historically have been reserved for vehicles with at least two passengers, Corzine said. The HOV lanes exist between interchanges 11 and 14.
This is paired with a budget proposal to have a "gas guzzler" surcharge of at least $180 for luxury vehicles with low fuel mileage.
Calling gas prices the third-most burdensome issue for residents --behind property taxes and health care -- Corzine called on the Legislature to authorize a three-month pilot program on the turnpike and in select communities to see whether self-service stations will mean savings of 5 to 6 cents per gallon for consumers.
The measure requires legislative approval, but Corzine said it's possible to have a program before summer.
"If we can enforce the pass-through (savings to consumers) and we can maintain that over a period of time, it would be permanent and broadly applied throughout the state," Corzine said.
The suggestion left him at odds with some of his own party in the Legislature.
Assembly Transportation Committee Chairman John S. Wisniewski, D-Middlesex, said self-serve gasoline would inconvenience senior citizen and disabled drivers without lowering prices.
"If I was in the industry and I was going to be able to save the cost of having to hire the people to pump gas, I'm going to do everything I can to create the impression that this is the best thing in the world," Wisniewski said. "And once the Legislature is supposedly lulled into believing this works, then they don't have to behave anymore."

2.87 average?
Bullshit, I filled my car up at 3.15 last week, and it's up to 3.33 today.

screw.
that.
I'd rather be able to cruise at 70-75 and pay $40 for gas 2 times a week than be stuck all the way down at 60 MPH

So, his solution to the gas problem is to make it so that gas stations can be self serve so that the people manning the pumps don't need to work there anymore? I assume there is more than 1 attendant pumping gas anyhow. Interesting theory. Also interesting is the fact y'all still have full serve gas stations. I haven't seen one of those in a long long time. lol
And...a politician that is going against his previous statements...that is a pretty new concept. Get's himself voted in...then it is do what will make me the most money...
Lowering the speed limit will only generate more revenue for the highway patrol and whatnot...that is probably part of the motivation for it as well.

cuz they are stupid....
I know most politicians are corrupt, but Corzine is one of the worst, yet they still elect him again and again.

What a major tool He is going to tax people who are stuck with gass guzzlers a $180 tax. As they aren't already as he said "gas prices the third-most burdensome issue for residents" well now he wants to burden you with additional money to pay who??? The state of New Jersey. He is a fuckstick. New Jersey deserves this asshat because they voted this pimple on life to be govenor!!!!
