Rally Mustang

So, im currently aware that many of you may think im retarded for this idea, but i would really like to make my 2003 V6 automatic mustang into some sort of rally car. Nothing extreme, just enough to throw some dirt around, not lookin to 4-wheelin or anything, just want to tear some dirt and maybe fling a bit of mud. I figure id need a 12" lift for the ~30" tires im looking at. I have a buddy that could help me with that, and as far as tires go, i just need to see about rim size. But im sure i would need chasis work, and i really like the i dea of a turbo as well. Ive heard of V6's with TT's getting like 11 seconds and under on the 1/4 mile. Im not looking for that much power, but some added horses would be nice. My friend mentioned before might be able to help with that as well. I heard about a T04 turbo charger that is supposedly both good for mustangs as well as off road. What do you guys think? Am i wrong in any of the above? Im very unexperienced and not too proud to admit it. Im just lookin for a little wisdom.

Im 17 actually, ill be 18 this november. its pretty unorthodox to be sure, but i like the idea.

I've seen pictures of mustangs and craparos on big wheels, but how "rally" they were I don't know.

A turbo is a pretty intensive modification. Not something you can just slap on there. The Mustangs that are in the 11s are heavily modified V6s, not something that you can just throw into the engine bay.

Im sure it is. The only reason i metion it casually is because im not sure its even a realistic possibility, and also, if it were, my friend (kyle rocus) is pretty experienced in that sort of installation, etc... Ive got a link here though, a guy by the name justin runs a TT stock V6 on a 11 sec. 1/4 quarter mile. This may be misleading, but hes got pictures of the little print out from the strip as well as pictures of his turbo set up and all. Of course theres alot of piping and a fancy oil pump deal, but it seemed as if the engine it self was relatively stock. let me see if i cant find that page again.

The mustang chassis is not the best to do rallying with. I'd recommend finding an AWD, turbo chassis and using that.
Also, do you realize how big a 12 inch lift is? That would not only be overkill, but it would raise your center of gravity, leading to an increased rollover factor. There's also no need to run 30's for tires, I'd recommend running something a touch smaller, but made specifically for dirt/gravel racing. You could find some of these fairly easily.

Uhm...I've done a fair amount of offroading in my stang back in the day, the other thing I'll warn you about is wear and tear on the car. I didn't do very much rally racing in my car, but I'll tell you the gravel/mud will cake under your whole car, filling every crack and crevace, leading to parts wearing out prematurely and more rattles and noises than a camaro on a gravel road.

i thought about that, and i really like the idea, the roblem is, i wouldnt know where to begin. i would most definately need alot of help, and this is a pretty small town too, so im not sure how much help i could find. my kyle frien might know about it. but if he didnt id be pretty S.O.L. yeah, youre right, it was just that some michelin tires i was looking at were 29.6 for rear, and 29.2 for front, i did some rough measurements, and (for those tires) i would need to have the body hiked way up to give the weels enough room to turn in the wheel well. but yeah, smaller tires rather than extreme lift is smarter, and ultimately cheaper im sure. now the mud isnt a terribly big issue in my circumstanges actually, seein as how it hardly rains here, it would mostly be dirt/sand types of terrain, which im sure would cake up eventually, but not nearly as fast or as bad as mud would. an AWD conversion would be really (smart) awesome, but i actually wasnt sure if it was really done until you and another guy confirmed it. also, this wouldnt be hardcore rally, more along the lines of a "some fun in the dirt" kind of set up. i dont know where i could get the stuff/get it done around here. how much would the AWD chasis and all cost do you figure?

I was just saying because isnt the general rule to rally class racing is the engine has to be 2.0l and under, turbo, and AWD?

and why would you want to rally race a mustang? its RWD, which when modded, is tricky on concrete, i cant imagine that on dirt going 60 down some muddy hill.

get a wrx/impreza/sti, or a evo, or a 90-99 dsm(eclipse, talon, laser are called dsm's for short, since all 3 are exactly the same save for minor exterior changes), or a couple other cars that are awd that i cant think of. and its not about the lift of the suspension, its the actual suspension itself. if you see rally cars, theyre pretty low, but have suspension work designed for rally only.

or get a truck. you seem to like a 12" lift idea, well there you go. and you gotta get the straw hat and accent and marry your sister to go with it. oohwee git r done!

Nope, 2.0l is the largest engine you can run. thats why the jap. spec STI runs a 2.0l , so they can run them in rally events. Saw that on Top Gear once.

you can do anything you put your mind to, but I doubt you will find much backing on nearly any mustang site nore from more anyone locally. GL to you though, the fox chassis is so old im sure there are many parts out there cheap.

heh, yeah, well see, its just an idea, and i wouldnt be doing it to compete, it would be more like just if ive had a really bad day, i could pull off to a dirt field and have me some fun. Nah, no 60 mph muddy stuff, theres no mud here any way, but yeah, mustangs are super common around here, and you dont see any fit for any off road kind of thing. Largely it would just be just to do something new with a mustang.

rally mustangs...sounds like a good idea but you definately need some heavy duty coilover setup and lots of undercarriage plating to make it effective. and definately need to ditch our solid axles for IRS
