Throwout bearing question

How hard is it to replace a throwout bearing, what all is involved, and about what costs would I be looking at?

You have to drop the tranny and then replace the bearing. It isn't burried or anything like that. And, it isn't tough if you have a lift. I helped the shop do mine...and realized I could have easily done it myself if I had a lift.

My cost would have been $200 for labor had I not helped...since I helped, I only paid $50.

All steps involved in my car:

Remove the Catback
Remove the H Pipe
Drop the drive shaft
Drop the tranny
Disconnect the clutch cable
remove the shift fork (I am guessing that is what it is called?)
Remove the bearing
Replace the Bearing
Re-install previously removed items.

It guides the shift fork (that is what I am calling it) along the input shaft so that it doesn't move around when pressing in the clutch. It is really just a guide.

Ok, well typical symptoms of a throwout bearing going out would be a squeaking/rattling when you let off the clutch right? And it stops when you have the clutch pressed.

That is exactly what I was experiencing...upon inspection, there was nothing left inside the bearing ring and it was flopping everywhere.

The reason it goes away is that you are putting pressure on it so it holds it together to prevent the noise.

The bearing needs replacing.

mine needs to be replaced also... it does the exact same thing (squeaks when i dont have the clutch in). but instead of just replacing that, i think i am going to have my whole clutch, etc. replaced since my car has 110,000 miles.

Do you know the people at the shop, or did you just ask if you could help? I would like to do that, but i think they would think i was stupid for asking.

Kind of both. I didn't know him well at the time, but I had had him work on some stuff in the past and talked about a number of upgrade options. He was doing the work by himself after hours in his dad's shop since he hadn't moved into his own place yet. So, he let me help out. I say ask...what's the worse they can say? No?

the throwout bearing sits on the end of the clutch fork and slides along the input shaft (as the fork arm pushes it in and out since it is attacked at one end by the clutch cable and is bolted to the bell housing on the other end)

The bearing pushes into the pressure plate fingers pushing them in to let the car go out of gear (neutral) to shift. It spins and the greese is packed in it, if it ticks its getting worn out. You had best replace the clutch while you are in there as its the same amount of work nearly~
