So I've been test driving different mustangs lately and I think I had too high of expectations for the GT. I drove an 03 with only 14k miles on it. Between 1,000-3000 RPM's it felt really sluggish. I thought with the added torque it would be quick out of the hole and push me back a bit.
Once i floored it and hit 3500 RPM's or so the car took off fine but I didn't like the sluggish feeling off idle. Is this how the GT's are? It was stock except for exhaust. I drove a 01 and it performed the same way as well. The v6 I had with all the bolt ons and a tune felt more torquey out of the hole.
Does the weight difference even out the extra 70hp the GT's have over my old 99?
I was set on getting a GT but now I'm not so sure anymore.

I had a rental 05 GT and was on the getting on the interstate with a 99-04 GT not sure what year exactly because he never got next to me. But I stomped on it as evidently he did. Know there are a lot of unknowns here like if he had any mods but I could not really pull on him as hard as I thought I would. He started about 3 car lengths when I stomped on it and had maybe 4 when I hit 100mph. The 05-06 feels heavy.

Seriously, I would not even look at the 2v 4.6's. Look for a `99-`01 Cobra. You can get one with resonable milage for just a little more than the used GT's.

with 4.10 gears in the rear end.. 2V 4.6s can be very worthwhile.. I miss mine with a passion sooo easy to mod, easy to drive and I got 22-23 MPG on my drive to work.. using regular..
next test drive, try this.. rev it to about 2000 RPM then let the clutch most of the way out and floor it right as you take your foot off the clutch.. then see if you change your mind at all..
or you could dump it and floor it at the same time and smoke the crap outta the tires... that'll be enjoyable also.. and pisses the salesmen/women off

Yes...they are screaming "RUN AWAY!!!!!"
As for the GTs, they have more umph up top than they do down low. It is the standard behavior...at least that is what I experienced with my 5 speed 2000.

thats how they are they dont peak tq till 4k rpms and they are top end motors~ not enough tq down low for me. I would look at a mach 1 or 99-01 cobra before I purchased a 2v 4.6

do you know what the CR is on the 99-01 cobra? I want to know if they require premium fuel like yours.

lol top end motor?
nah id say a 2v 4.6 is just decent all around. its decent down low, and decent up top. coming from a turbo background, its nice to have power without having to wait till youre at 5psi or such before it starts gaining momentum, though unlike that turbo, it lacks the top end i was used to. but as a DD with some bawls thats fun to get sideways, i wouldnt trade it for anything at this point.

Well, compared to some of the other V8s, the 4.6 mod motor in 2V form does take a little more RPM to really get in the powerband. My 3V is the same way. It has no where the low-end grunt of the 5.0.

Raise your hand if you are not aware that Eclipse has a turbo background.
*Looks around*
We know you came from a turbo background

Thats just the modular motor in general for you. Even the 96-98 cobra guys over on SVT complain about no low end grunt... but they'll rev forever. This is the reason they tend to go with nothing less than a 4.30 gear when they decided its time for a rear end swap. Hell, most of the guys over there with the 4v cobras will have 4.56's. Its just the way they are. 2v is no better. Get a roots style s/c on there, and youll have your low end grunt
Rock on for the 5.0!!
