Here is the truth unless you are going to go to the track and use drag slicks or do wheel stands the stock Ford T-locs are fine. I have seen almost every type of differential blow apart or break. The truth of the matter most of the time it is the universal joints. They are the weakest link. That is why a safety loop on the dirve shaft is required on serious drag cars

I would just get an 8.8, leave it stock except for whatever ratio gears you want, and leave it at that. The Ford 8.8 has been proven over the years to take absolute tons of abuse and hold up. I wouldn't waste my time building a 7.5 when a 8.8 can be had for the price of what you are going to spend on the upgrades. Ask SpectorV about how great the 7.5s are.
When you start launching it hard on slicks and you are making a decent amount of power (~300 rwhp+), you may want to go to 31 spline for the sake of the axles.

Well I have had decent luck with a 7.5 and several people with V6 mustangs and over 300HP have survived nicely. I will add and agree with you, if you can find a decent priced 8.8 IN GOOD SHAPE with 373 or 4.10s already installed go for it. But I can honestly say I have much less in my rear end in cost than most people who swap to 8.8's especially if they are going to change gears . Remember you are buying a used rear end and might up having to rebuild the whole unit and new gears which then it would not pay off.

^yeah I'm one of those people that is holding up so far with the 7.5 and a T-lock.
Let me say though, if you want a LOT of power, like above 400rwtq, you may want to just go ahead and go to an 8.8, BUT the STOCK 8.8 is not incredibly better than the 7.5, IMO. If you get an 8.8, get a better differential, girdle, etc to go along with it.
My point is this, if you want to do a rear swap, do it right the first time. DON'T get a used one, get one that you know what has happened with it. Get a very good differential and girdle, non used gears, upgrade to 31 spline axles, etc.
My plan is that when I get a daily driver, and the time/money to seriously work on my car, a 31 spline 8.8 is definately on the list, but as it stands now, with some of the stuff I've done with this car since the turbo, I DON'T paln on changing in out any time soon. I know some people have broken the 7.5 on near stock power (SpectorV) but the same has happened with the 8.8.
Rear ends are unfortunately very persnickety~

That is exactly how I am doing mine.
I picked up a used 8.8, a 31 spline Tru-trac, just have to order gears & axles.

I would disagree and say that a stock 8.8 is indeed incredibly better than a 7.5. I knew a guy that used to run low 7s, high 6s in the 1/8th on a stock 8.8, launching on slicks. He did this for years and eventually broke an axle one night. It cost him next to nothing to replace (stock 8.8 Mustang axles are everywhere, I have 4 sitting at my house).
A 7.5 would never have stood up to the first launch.

I have seen a stock 7.5 run 7's numerous time and even slicks. But I would not suggest using slicks or doing wheel stands
