this noise is kind of hard to explain... it almost sounds like a bad wheel bearing, but im pretty sure you know its a wheel bearing because it only makes noise when the steering wheel is turned a certain way. my car makes this noise when i am in gear and barely pushing the gas pedal. for instance... if i am driving on the highway around a set speed and am barely pushing the gas in 5th gear. the whine goes away if i let off the gas or push the gas in further... so im pretty sure the accelerator is the cause of the whinning, but im not sure. any ideas?

Something else i forgot to mention... it sounds like it is coming from the rear of the car, so im pretty sure its not my belt, but i will still check it.

It's your rear gears by what you're describing. Mine do the same thing, and they're factory.

gears generally whine when you coast, not when you are accelerating~ but it may still be a rear end issue. Thats how my 01 did at least.

Mine won't whine coasting or accelerating. You have to just barely be on the gas in 4th gear in my car.
I can't really hear mine anymore with the tire noise and exhaust. I've found out bald tires are very loud lol.

my black car whined around 65mph while not accelerating due to the gears were used~ many stock v6s did this and they had a tsb on it but all they did was put in different uppers/lowers to absorb the noise better.... they were giving out 8.8s and I got in JUST as they stoped... mine was on FREAKING ORDER and they canceled it

so if it was my rear end, would new gears and t-lok take care of the noise?

probably, the only thing left would be the axles/wheel bearings.... lol you should replace those anyway~ with new seals (not to expensive) that pretty much takes care of the entire rotating assembly back there other than the brake system.

You seem to be having a lot of little problems arise. Nothing major, but just some high mileage maintanance issues.
We are here for you.

Yeah i am having some little problems from high mileage, but thats what i expected to have. I guess if i want to look at it in a positive way... im learning a lot more than i would on a newer car. Plus... I figured i could just replace parts that go wrong with nicer, performance parts.
But yeah... I really appreciate all of the help i get from this site. It helps out a whole lot.

How much does t-lok actually do? I think I might get some new gears.. probably 3.73, but since im also going to need a tuner, i dont know if i want to spend the money on t-lok.
How hard is it to replace wheel bearings and/or axles? All this costs enough just to buy, so i would really rather do it myself. Maybe i should just look for an entire rear end out of a wrecked gt or something that has low mileage... can i do that? lol

it really doesnt do a massive amount, but its well worth the 200 bucks to get one if you are doing a gear swap. I wouldnt just put in a tlok unit.
If you get the gears intalled at a good place they will replace the bearings on the gears and there are only two more bearings at the end of the axle so it wont be much more to have them do that. The seals are also pretty cheap.
Why do you need a tune for gears, you can get a speecal (as I did on my 01) worked great and cost me 100 bucks.

I would only buy a good rear end rom a 99-04 gt, the gear ratio will be the same though...

ok.. so i get 3.73 gears, t-lok, and a speedcal... probably run about $600-700 installed? Will the larger gears make me run at higher rpms and/or do they have any other disadvantages? I already know not to get richmond because they whine... but just wondering if there was anything else.

you will speed up you rpms. I think its 250-300 rpms over what you are at now, you will gain a bit of gas milage in the city and lose some on the highway. In my 01 v6 with cai, exhaust, upd, gears, rims/tires, aluminum driveshaft it got 21-22mpg~ 50/50 hwy/city
the KEY to gears is getting a QUALITY install talk with them ask what all things they set when they install gears. They should say backlash, pinion depth, crush sleeve, wear pattern~ if they dont know what any of those are... go else where.
200 for gears, 200 for tlok, 100 for speed cal, 200-400 for install, 60-100 for bearings.

I'm having the same whinning noise problem with my car (01 conv.) but it only does it when i making a left turn.....i was told that it was probably the wheel bearings. i went to the parts store...it cost $43 for a set of 4. I'm going to try and put them on myself. I also have speaking noise when i'm driving ....mainly over bumps. Someone suggested that i changed my upper control arm bushings. Anybody know where i can get those cheap? the dealer ship wanted 37 bucks per bushing! I thought that was a little too much for a piece of rubber. The car has alot of miles...but other than the stupid little problems......it runs strong

the whinning noise that you hear when you are turning is definately a wheel bearing. as for the other stuff... i have no idea.
