Oil Change

Ok, its time for an oil change on my 00 mustang. I usually put Pennzoil (spelling looks odd) 5W-30 in my car, however, I can't help but wonder if a synthetic oil or another type of oil would cause better car performance in power or gas mileage. Can anyone name pro's and con's on different oils. Any help or encouragement would be greatly appeciated. Thanks!

lose the Penn... I use a Motorcraft oil filter... and I use Motorcraft 5W-20 synthetic blend oil. Your engine calls for 5W-20... why not use what it asks for? As my buddy says "Motorcraft is made by Ford... as is the car". I've never had a problem with either the oil or the filter.. and it's pretty cheap... both things I like
I hear the way Pennzoil is made, or, the type of oil it is... if you leave it in 'extra' miles... it'll really start damaging your engine... whereas a Motorcraft oil, or a synthetic oil like Mobil 1, wouldn't.

Pennzoil and Quaker State (same company) are some oils to stay away from.
Like Beaner said, if you don't want to go full syn, Motorcraft is the best way to go as it is already a synthetic blend oil.
However, I would highly recommend FULL synthetic oil. It's just so much better for the vehicle. It smooths and quiets your idle, has better cleansing properties and addatives, and all around makes your engine happy. There was also a study done where they dyno'd a vehicle with standard lubricants, then replaced them all with synthetic lubricants. They re-dyno'd it with ALL synthetic lube and it gained and extra 20 hp. Now this was on an all out drag car, so our gains will not be nearly that good, but just some food for thought.

ive youve waited this long its probably to late. Use the cheap stuff and be happy. I use synthetic from the start keeps the motor much cleaner~ you could use it and it might help a bit but there is already build up from using regular oil~

You're probably right, you would have to flush the engine for that to do much good now probably~
But on a side note, the 5w-20 thing is just because Ford did a study that showed they gained 1 or 2 extra MPG's from using that oil. if it's and `00, I would recommend at least 5w-30, it not going to 10w-30. As the engine gets older, and things start wearing out, it needs a better lubricating, thicker oil.

So I should probably stick to a non synthetic oil, and shy away from Pennzoil? I use a Motorcraft filter, just not Motorcraft oil. Also, I heard that you're plugs should be changed about the same time as your oil. Is this true?

You don't need to change your plugs when you change your oil.

Plugs should be changed every 30,000 miles, oil every 3,000.
So not quite.
Also, if you do decide to switch to synthetic oil, the Motorcraft Synthetic is supposed to be good stuff and is a much cheaper alternative to Mobil 1 (which is what most people around here will probably recommend).

Motorcraft is an excellent oil. But if you want a full syn, I would go with Mobile 1. I had always used Motorcraft, but when I went to Mobile, it was like night and day.

yeah... I love Mobil 1 too... but I hear most synthetics are about the same... so might as well just figure out a weight you want, and buy the cheaper synthetic. Havoline... Castrol... Mobil 1... all good oil companies.

I always put Mobil 1 in the '90, but the '06 is going to get Motorcraft. I really don't think there's a justification in the price difference between the two. Mobil 1 is nearly twice as expensive.
Now I feel kind of stupid for buying it for the '90 as long as I did...

All their weights are syn blend except one I believe and I cant remember it it's 10w-30 or 40. (Or I could just be making that all up and all of them are blends).
And no, they do not make a full syn.

I'm going to see if I can notice a difference... I filled it up with the Motorcraft stuff, and I'll see if there's a difference when I put full synthetic in... and if there's a difference, I'll go with the syn.
