MIGHT be getting a LX...

The folks are concerned about my putting so many miles on my car when I start driving to Huntsville everday for UAH, so they have been thinking about getting me a little beater to drive between here and there. (I think they are almost as proud of the car as they are of their's, lol).

There is a little `93 LX here at a local used car lot:

White.

It has 73k original miles.

The paint definately looks like it was garaged all it's life.

1 owner.

CD/AC.

Very nice looking well kept interior.

Nice looking tires and are in good shape on stock rims.

Auto...I'm kinda meh on this. I miss driving a stick so I wanted my next car ot be a manual...

The outside has some body damage:

A chip and dent in hood right in the front.

The front bumper looks like it was curbed or something. One side is bent up slightly higher than the other.

It is missing a small piece of the "midway" trim and has a few paint blems.

They are asking $3,390 for it.

So what do you guys think?

I need to know what was good and bad about these cars, the gas mileage they get, if this is a good price, etc.

PLUS IT HAS A SUN ROOF WHICH I NEARLY SPLOOGED OVER!!!!

I'm assuming this is a 5.0L car? Otherwise the price is ridiculous.

Also, is it a hatch or a coupe? The coupes are worth a decent amount more these days, due to their rapidly declining population.

73k original miles is fairly low, but be warned that the odometer only has room for 5 digits (6 including the tenth of a mile), meaning that it only reads to 99,999 miles and then starts back at zero. Basically, it could actually be 173k miles. You might want to try and run a CarFax report on it first.

Otherwise, it sounds like a pretty good deal. Small imperfections can always be fixed. I'm also assuming the car is stock? With a fox body, that's really what you want, because these cars tend to have histories of abuse. A stock car is much less likely to have been beat on. Look for the air intake silencer which is a little snorkel looking like thing in the fenderwell that attaches to the air-box. If it's there, I can say with 99% certainty that the car is stock.

Also, if you're planning any major mods (i.e. boost) in the future, be warned that the '93s came with hypereutectic pistons and therefore don't hold up as well as the earlier year models.

I did not know that, thanks for that info on the odometer. It looks in really good shape except for the damage, but I will try to find that out for sure.

It looks 100% stock on the outside. I just went out and looked at it tonight under the safety of nightfall. So I have not seen under the hood or driven it et which I would do all of before I would get it.

I would keep it 100% stock except maybe a few cosmetic things.

The 6 banger would become th etrue project car and the 4 banger will be DD.

Just know that the five speed 5.0Ls get nearly just as good gas mileage as the 2.3L autos. Trust me, I've had both.

Also, that price is high. I'd aim for absolutely no more than $2500. I paid $3500 for a near mint condition '92 about 5 years ago (don't remember the mileage, it was less than 100k though), and I paid way too much. The body on it was perfect though except for a couple of door dings.

For maybe a grand more, you should be able to find a 5.0L in similar shape (maybe with higher miles) if you look long enough.

I had never priced a 5.0...I didn't know they were that cheap~

I will be doing some extensive looking around first. I may not even get another stang, but it was there and I was wondering. I really want a manual again.

The '92 I was talking about was also a four cylinder.

Really, around North Alabama, you may be looking at more like 5k for a decent 5.0 though. Although, I hear people on internet forums talking all the time about the nice foxes they get for 3.5k. I guess in our area people just ask a lot more than they are worth and end up getting it.

Check KBB values on them though and you'll see that you may be able to get one pretty cheap.

yea the 4 bangers have shitty gas milage so dont buy one for that reason. People also WAY over price them. You can pick up a 94+ gt for a good price still but they are even going up in price as well... sad
