How to seafoam your car

Ok, you all wanna know about Seafoam. Seafoam is this stuff that is used to dissolve carbon deposits in your combustion chambers and will do the same on the IRMC's pretty well. I was skeptical at first, but then I used it and WOW, what a difference on my 96 Cobra. It can be bought at most autoparts stores. I'm big over on STLMustangs.com: The Gateway To American Muscle, and if you post over there asking about it, you'll here about 30 people sing its praises. People say to put it in the gas, but then it's just like injector cleaner and doesn't do shit barely. I was told to use the PCV valve to suck it into the motor, so that's what I did.



Step 1: with the motor off, simply pull the PCV hose out of the DRIVER-side valve cover, but leave it connected to the manifold.



Step 2: Open the bottle of Seafoam (the fluid, not the aerosol spray kind) and put the end of the PCV hose into the can, while keeping the can as upright as possible at first. You'll need 2 people, one to hold the can, one inside the car.



Step 3: Start the motor for about 12 seconds. This will suck all the contents out of the bottle into the motor. The can-holder should signal to the person in the car to turn-off the motor as soon as the can is empty. The faster you turn it off, the better. You'll notice that the motor will nearly die when it sucks in the Seafoam, this is normal. Seriously, it'll work fine after the process is done.



Step 4: Let the car sit for 30 minutes with the engine off.



Step 5: MAKE SURE YOU ARE IN A VEEERY WELL VENTILATED AREA. This will cause quite a smoke-show. Start the motor, let it idle for about 30 seconds. The engine will be sluggish and want to die, but will usually stay running. After 30 seconds or so, raise the RPM to about 2800 and hold it there until you feel the motor start to rev more freely (usually about 20-40 seconds). This step makes lots of smoke. That is all the dissolved carbon blowing out.



Step 6: Take the car out for a spin. Go WOT as soon as possible. This should clear the remaining contaminates.



Step 7: Drive the car around at different speeds and RPM's until it feels like the car is running like normal. After 10-15 of driving, you should notice a large increase in power, more smoothness in revs, and an all-round better running motor. After 74,000 miles I did this, and it felt like the engine had gained 20 horsepower, even though it was probably just underpowered with carbon before.





A can of Seafoam is about $4-5 and the can looks old-school. It has ornate style writing and kinda resembles an old shaving-cream can. Ask the store people, they'll know. It should be by the injector cleaners, etc.



I just used this stuff on my 97 cobra that has 66000 miles on it and boy did it make a HUGE difference, trust me give it a try its well worth it.

anyone else have any experience with this stuff? does it have the potential to damage anything? if it really works that well and isnt going to hurt anything, i may as well try it since i have high mileage.

basically its like 118 octane so theres reall no way it can hurt the engine

This stuff is the shiznit. I just put some in my car and you can really tell a difference, especially at low engine speed throttle responce. Saying it smokes a good bit doesn't do it justice, it smokes like you poured oil staight into each combustion chamber or something, but thats good. I bought 2 bottles to put 1 in my gas tank, but didn't read this post that good and poured 1 staight into my left cylinder head, (I imagine its pretty damn clean) and then went back and read the post and used the other bottle the way it says. Every time I put the tube into the bottle it would stall my car out so I had to do it several times until it suck all the seafoam out, but my car needs a tune pretty bad, I added a 75mm TB, 80mm MAF, etc, and it runs pretty lean I think, it doesn't idle very good. Anyway I recommend this, it seems to have cleaned out my engine pretty good. I haven't tried it, but I went on other sites, and saw were people put it in their crankcase and drive it a little before they change their oil, and they also put it in their brake booster.

I just did this to my car yesterday... and put it in the brake booster line. Hollyyyyy smokes. This stuff is awesome. My car is a 2000 mustang, with 81.7k miles on it. It feels like i got some HP back. Really like the stuff, works wonders.

Now that I started to use my brian and thinking about it, I did put seafoam in my crankcase by pouring it into my left cylinder head. I went and bought some knew oil and filter and the guy at the autozone said if you put it in the crankcase your suppose to let it run for about 15 minutes and then change your oil. Thats probably about as long as I run my car after putting the seafoam in it so it should be alright.

Well I have an 89 5.0 and Im having a hard time figuring out which line to use for a vaccume tube.... any thoughts?

don't see why not? its basically 120 octane. but i won't be held liable if you blow it up

itll be fine, just throw it in the brake booster. All it does is clean all the carbon, if anything itll help any buildup on the s/c.

sorry for being ignorant... im not really sure what you mean when you say put it in the brake booster... im guessing its the line from the intake to the brake fluid reservoir but im just speculating.

Should be the only vacuum hose plugged into the brake booster(located on the firewall directly behind the master cylinder). It usually has a clamp around it that you need pliers to release and slide back so you can wiggle the line off. as for how to connect the seafoam can to the booster im not sure because ive never used it.

I just did it on my car(1995 Ford Escort with 173,000 on it) and it seems like it freed up some hp.

What lines are you guys using on 4.6 motors? I see a few that might work, but just out of curiuosity would like to know what one everyone else is using. i was thinking one of the valve cover breather lines that go to the plenum, and sticking a smaller vacuum hose into the larger one, so it sips at it rather than chug. you *Could* hydrolock it if it ingests too much at a time. it might be 120 octane, but gasoline iss usually introduced in near vapor form in the intake stream, not poured in in liquid form.

btw ive done this repeatedly on dsm's, and introduced the seafoam before the turbo and never any trouble with turbo's(the turbo will turn it into a mister basically, atomizing the seafoam for even better results) so doing such to a blower shouldnt be a problem.
