The offer is from Command Alkon as a programmer. They write software for concrete and asphalt companies and other such stuff. They are number one in the world in their field. Their main headquarters is in Birmingham,Al. The cost of living there is a bit higher than here, rent will be 200 more or so~ other than that its mostly the same as my area. The pay is an increase of 63% and I will gain experience in my field that I can use to move back to Huntsville in a year or so and get a good job closer to home. It is 1.5 hours away or there about. I currently enjoy my job but the pay is not great and its not in my field (directly) so the experience I gain here will not help me very much in obtaining a job in Huntsville (even entry level jobs are placed by people with a year or two experience there...), which I have been looking for going on seven months. I do not really know all the details of the work environment and such, but I plan to find out today during lunch. I just dont want to make a mistake and take it and regret it. Any information that you have to offer would be greatly appreciated.
Discuss.

congratulations. i think i would take it. you havent had much luck finding another job in the same field and the pay is much better, plus its going to help you find a job you want in the long run. the worst thing that can happen is you take the job, try it out, and decide you just hate it... its not really going to hurt anything to quit.

I had an interview with them a couple of years ago. They offered to hire me on at the same pay rate that I got here in Huntsville. I told them that I appreciated the offer and respectfully declined. They seemed like a decent enough company, it just didn't make monetary sense for me to go to work for them. Have you been to their corporate headquarters? It's a super nice place.

I interviewed with them at the main headquarters near Hoover. So they offered the same as I would be offered for an entry level job in Huntsville I take it? I will have to pay the same payments here or there or in Huntsville for that matter in my case.
Also how do you think the pay increase will be over the next five years, ive asked but I have not recieved a direct answer.

They said that they were offering more than a regular entry level position. They claimed that contractors usually got paid more 'cause they didn't have as much job security. I don't know if I believe them or not...but I wasn't about to move to B'Ham without getting a decent raise.
I don't have a clue about the five year thing.

Having spent the last 6 years trying to break into the development world...I suggest taking it even for just a year so that when you send the resume out next time it will have live experience on it. I didn't do that and it took me 6 years to get another development offer. So, now I am an entry level developer with 10 years development experience. People are affraid to hire people with no real world development experience...except in baton rouge where it seems if you go to LSU, you are guaranteed a job somewhere local whether you can code or not...I am seeing that daily as I fix the shit the previous innept people wrote.

I would definately take the position. You never know who will "discover" you. My Dad was discovered at a business that had to pay employees when they had cash because their checks would bounce. He was found and now he's a webmaster and computer scientist for NASA...

You might as well take it. The worst that could happen would be you wouldn't like it. But then you can always stick it out for a year and have the experience.

If you don't mind being in B-Ham, I'd probably take it if I were you too.

Take It !! If for no other reason then the experience .The 63% pay increase should cover increased living expense.
I've worked in the IT Field for 10 years and it wasn't easy getting started just like Smurfin stated
