Last week I bought a set of 2002 Stang seats from the wreckers. They weren't the leathers that I wanted, but the two other shops in town that had them wanted my left nut for them.... because I'm quite attached to that nut in particular, I settled with the cloths.

Anyway, today I spend the afternoon dying them from charcoal grey to black, and you now see the result in front of you.

I went for a rip around the block after finishing, and holy crap am I sitting up higher now. It's amazing how much difference some newer, stiffer padding makes. I'm thinking that I'm going to want to see if the '83 seat rails are any shorter because the riding height is so strange now.

(BTW, no comments on the ugly state of my interior. I still have my camping shit in there from this weekend because I'll just have to load it again next weekend.... yes I'm that lazy.)

After doing these, and finding out how easy it was to get them done, I'm thinking about doing the carpet as well. I was going to buy new carpets, but this is WAY cheaper and my carpets are still in good shape.

are you planning on Dying the rest of the interior?

btw check some upholstery shops around your area. theres a custom one in my area that does alot of work for high end custom shops, and quoted me 450$ to do my Tbird seats(worn cracked grey leather) in new black leather with red tbird logos in the headrests. maybe you can get lucky.

Hmmm... it's something I haven't looked at yet, but have been thinking about. Right now I just wanted to get something new in place because the stock seats were worn out, the driver's seat was beginning to tear, and they were just ready to go the way of the ghost. Getting them redone is something that I may look at next year, but this summer I have a ton of other stuff to get installed that I wish would've happened already - instead of doing that though, I've began to to see the light at the end of the tunnel in terms of my student loan, so instead of putting the cash I'd budgeted for the car into the car, I've been dumping bigger payments at my student loan so I can have it paid off by mid-August (oh baby I can't wait).

As for the getting the rest of it done, I was originally looking at buying a new black carpet, but after colouring these seats with such ease, I may just do the same to the carpet I've already got because it's still in really good shape and it's so much cheaper. I'm still not sure what I'm doing with the rear seat though - it's still in perfect shape, so I'm not sure if I want to keep it. This summer I've really been leaning toward doing the rear seat delete thing, but it's something I'll figure out over the winter. The rest of it (dash, console, doors, interior panels, trim, ceiling, etc) will remain red to give it an even two-tone look. My goal with the black is just to counter the overwhelming amount of red in the stock interior as you can see in this pic (the subs are no longer there).

The stuff I got was from an autobody supply shop here in town. It's made by Dupli-Color and is just called "Vynil & Fabric Color". It comes in a spray can and you apply it just the same way you would use spray paint.

1.) I thoroughly vacuumed, shampooed and steam cleaned the seats a couple of times (it may have been a little much, but I wanted to start with a fresh slate). I let them sit for a day to dry, them vacuumed them once again before dying them just to get any dust/dirt that may have settled on them.

2.) Removed the seat belt buckle, flip switch on the back, plastic cover on the side for the spring, seatbelt loops and I also unscrewed and covered the power seat controls on the driver's seat. I then pulled the headrests up as far as they would go and masked off the metal rod it sits on. Then I then removed one of the bolts on the side by the spring - this allowed me to lean the seat back all the way without falling apart (some people could take it all apart, but I didn't want the back to touch anything, so I just let it lean).

3.) Use fast, even strokes, I sprayed a very thin first layer on. After allowing it dry for about minutes, the dye was dry to the touch. The guy I was talking to never said to do this, but I brushed the seat down with a nylon hand brush just to break up the threads if they happened to have stuck together after the first coat. If any loose fibers came out of the seat, I used tweezers to pull them off before laying down the next coat.

4.) I continued to do Step 3 over and over again until the seat was completely covered.

5.) Once finished with Step 4 and the seat had dried, I flipped the backrest forward - having taken out the one bolt earlier let the seat go further than it normally would've. This allowed me to get the bottom side of the backrest and any other spots that I couldn't get while the seat was leaning back.

6.) After giving the seats a full day to dry in the 33*C heat we're having today, I'm going to give them one more steam cleaning to pick up any remaining dye particles that may be lingering.

After all was said and done, the seat's fabric feels the same as it did before I coloured them.

In total I used 1.5 cans per seat (not know how much I needed, I bought 4 just to be safe) and all of this cost me $33.00(CDN) since I already have a steam cleaner - this is why I'm saying it'd be much cheaper to dye my exsisting carpet instead of buying a new one for over $150(CDN)........ although it would be nice to get a little bit of that new car smell again from a fresh set of rugs.

those seats look good, but I love porno red, haha. I think the seats themselves are taller. I had a set of 94 seats on 90 seat tracks in my 90 and i still sat high, but I am only 5'9" so it wasn't a problem.

those are the seats I had in my 01 v6. They are not bad, the only mustang seats worth using for support are the 03 cobra that ive sat in, even the mach 1s have little support to me.

That's what I was really hoping to find, the Mach 1 seats, but they're pretty few and far between because the Mach owners aren't exactly looking to upgrade them very often.... around Edmonton at least.

Porno red is just one of those things that really should have died with the 80's. It's nearly as bad as that light blue interior color in some of the foxes.

I can say this, of course, because I used to be the not-so-proud owner of a Stang with the interior-color-that-shall-not-be-named. My dad still has it... poor bastard.

I don't mind it too much (I suppose I'm just used to it by now), but they should've figured out when to say enough is enough and learned to balance the colour out a bit.... and yes, it should've died back then. I still can't really figure out why they've brought it back with the '05+'s and charging everyone an arm and a leg for it.
