8.8 axle conversion questions

I'm looking into upgrading to a 8.8 rear axle with 3.73 gears.
1. are the 7.5 axles different than the 8.8 ones? I assume they are but I wanted to check.
2. anybody know of any good places to pick up an assembled 8.8 axle. I'm having trouble finding one new or used to fit my make.
3. What are everyone's opinions on the 28 vs the 31 spline axles? I'm thinking the 28 ought to be enough.

as long as it's from the same year range they are interchangeable.
Unless you are going to have a power adder the 28 spline is fine.

If you have a 99-04, you just need a 99-04 GT 8.8. If you have a 87-95 (possibly even all the way back to 79, but I'm not sure on that), you need an 87-95 8.8. The only reason for this is the length of the axle housings. If you have a 94-95 and get an earlier fox rear-end though, you will need to swap to 94-95 axles.
The 7.5 and 8.8 axles are interchangeable into the rear-ends. For example, Brent bought the 8.8 that came in my 90. When we put it in his car, we just took the axles out of his 7.5 (because they were the correct length and 5-lug) and put them into my old 8.8.
28 spline axles will be plenty until you start launching hard on slicks (less than 1.7 60's). Even then, they may hold up for a good while.

Yeah, I have a 2000, I forgot that wasn't in my sig anymore.
Also, slvr2000 stang Did I understand you right that the 7.5" axles and the 8.8" axles are interchangable?
and I'm in the process of building a blown 4.2 for the car so are you guy's of the opinion that 31 spline would be a better option?

It depends on how you are planning to drive it. If it's going to be going to the strip pretty often and launching on slicks: definitely. If you don't plan on running slicks though, I wouldn't worry about it.

Mostly I just autocross with it. I'll probably take it to a drag strip once in a while, but not all the time or anything... Thanks

31 spline axles are about $225 or so, the 31 spline differential is the more expensive part.
I have an 8.8 out of an 03 GT, A new 31 spline Tru-trac and 4.10 gears.
All I have to buy is the new axles.

If you are building the rear end, I would say to go ahead and install a 31 spline set up. It will give you room to grow, and you have pieceof mind that you wont break the rear end when racing.

I have a 66 Mustang. I am wandering if I can put a 9 inch rear end on it. Does anyone know what rear ends will work with it. I am also trying to put rear disk brakes. I was thinking a newer mustang would work. People I have talked to have gave me mixed out puts. Some say it won't work.

Unless you are planning on running some serious power, I would stick with an 8.8" for simplicity. A properly built 8.8" will stand up to a lot.
