I am installing the following in my 01 gt convertible friday. Tell me what you think.
Kenwood DPX-501 double din
Memphis 4 channel 75x4 MCA-? don't have it in front of me right now.
5x7 MB Quart 5x7 RCE-268 for both front and back
4 gauge wiring for the amp.
The MB quarts are rms for around 130 watts each.
I can go to 2ohm with my amp to around 115rmsx4. Would you recommend this for my speakers? They are 4 ohm speakers.
I am the one that has no room for subs.
I am going to get prewired for an amp for subs in case we change our minds.
Does anyone have any experience with any of these units?
Thanks
Jeff

if its a 4Ch don't run it 2 ohm when your speakers are only 4 ohm stable
but why double DIN?? and 4 GA is kinda overkill for a 4ch

I am super curious as to the results you get, especially if you're happy with the sound with the top down.
The only way you'll run that amp @ two ohms is to run 2 speakers in parallel ( 115w/ 2 speakers=57.7 w per speaker) If that amp supports 2 ohms i say go for it, Otherwise stereo at 4 ohms will get you more power per speaker.

4 guage is fine especially if they want to add a sub later
the speaker doesn't care if that amp is running at 4 or 2 or 1 ohm. Just don't overpower it or send it a clipped signal.

I beg to differ. Some speakers cannot handle certain ohm loads. The real problem, however, is running the amp at an ohm it can't handle. That's when you get problems with the amp cutting out.

True, Some speakers will not and yes please don't make the amp run at an impedance lower than what it is rated for.
I am positive though that those speakers would be fine in a 2 ohm load. However as I pointed out above, with that amp stereo (4x75) those speakers will recieve more power at a lower thd.

I just had to clear that up from personal experience. I ran a 2 ohm stable amp at 1 ohm for about 6 months. Couldn't figure out why it kept cutting off, then it fried one day. Come to find out I had wired my speakers wrong. Oops...lol. I've also blown a voice coil running a speaker at too low an ohm. Just didn't want someone else finding out the wrong way.

you were lucky it lasted six months.
What brand and type of speaker blew? And what impedance did it blow at? and how was it wired, how many other speakers?
Well in any event sorry to hear that happened.

Haha, back when I first started doing stereos. A kenwood something or another 12, SVC, dunno what it was rated for or anything. I ran it at 2 ohm on a 300 watt jensen amp. It ended up really screwing that speaker up.

I like the look of the stereo. I don't want a screen and i don't want the slot below the small players. The installer thinks it will look nice. The Kenwood deck doesn't detract from the look inside of the car. I am also going with 4GA because I may want an amp for a sub later if i can make it work with the room in the trunk.

The memphis will MOST DEFINATELY run those speakers on 2 OHM Stereo.. It is only stable to 4 OHM bridged...
IMO Memphis is the best FRICKIN Audio equipment ever.... I have recently aquired memphis at my shop and it is phenomenal..It absoulutely blows away our JL and Alpine in every way...
Plus, I buy MY personal stuff at 1/2 COST
