That's ridiculous. He should be thrown into a tub full of warm jelly and crabs with large pincers and a hatred for nipples.

He does that to ensure the smoothest surface possible. I understand where he's coming from with making show only cars, but still...it's kinda ridiculous and the cheap/easy way out. I'd rather do metal work and make the metal perfectly smooth and use a very light skim over the body to ensure absolutely smooth surfaces and the best gap lineups possible. It's pretty cool how easy it is to fix trunk/hood/door gaps by using a light bondo skim. I need to practice more though...

dude most of the best shops use the techniques that his painters use. even Charley, who was once Coddingtons go-to guy for paint, uses body filler even after extensive body work. the term "Bondo Bucket" comes straight from this process.
Coddingtons cars are Top Notch. anyone who bases their quality on the mere 3 minutes they actually show them working on the cars are a fucktard. the cars they show are the "Drama Cars", the good ones that the rest of the shop produces that arent shown cause all the drama queens arent working on them are some of the best cars to grace this country.
you really think if using the bondo technique was that bad, that Coddington would still win 1st place at almost every car show he attends?

I like the cars he produces, but Boyd himself is a clueless tool. It's no wonder they've lost all of their best guys over the course of a year or so.

I'm not denying that Boyd's cars look top notch. I just thinking skimming an entire car with bondo is a little over the top. If someone decides to drive that car on a power tour or something, that car will be ruined, a rock will hit the bondo and the entire panel will crack. I am no hardcore-metal-only guy by any stretch, my car has a pretty decent amount of filler on it, its great for fixing things, smoothing out welds and shaved stuff, and even fixing gaps like lowflyn said. I also wouldn't go as far as to call me a "fucktard" because I don't think a car should be completely coated in bondo. I'm not saying I'm a pro by any means, but I am willing to bet I have way more body work experience than you.

it doesnt really matter if you think it shouldnt be coated in body filler, or if you dont use it, because all of the cars done that way, after extensive body work, will use body filler over the whole surface anywhere any work was done. hell id like to know that my car was entirerly covered in body filler and every inch was gone over with a fine tooth comb (or in this case, 1000grit). its just another "attention to detail" thing that most people dont do.
besides, by the time theyre done with the body work, 99% of that body filler is sanded off.
and i highly doubt a entire panel will crack right down to the 1mil layer of body filler thats left due to a rock. if anything, their countless layers of clear his cars recieve will just chip.

so you are telling me that instead of your car having primer/sealer/paint/clear right over the metal, you'd rather have a substance between them that expands and contracts with heat and is much more fragile than steel?
I use filler over the areas that I have worked on, but I don't coat the entire car

'm sure 80% of that bondo ends up on the floor through sanding, he is just trying to make the surface smooth everywhere.

they use the body filler to make sure the panels are perfect, they sand off most of it only leaving what needs to be to make sure the panels are smooth. You can NOT eye ball it no those panels, things look WAY different after they are painted vs bare metal.

quick build primer > porous bondo that absorbs primer and paint
If I was paying that kind of money for a car, I'd rather have them spray the whole thing in black primer, then go over every with a light putting bondo only where needed, now THATS attention to detail my friends

Exactly.
Anyone who bondos an entire car is a hack. Plain and simple.
Primer will show nearly all imperfections in the paint. Really and truly, the best way to do it is primer and then spray a layer of base coat. Then check once again for any imperfections, which will now be very visible. If anything is found, fix it, prime it again, rinse and repeat.
They were probably in a rush to have the car done, so they just took the easy way out. Slap bondo over the entire car and then start sanding. I'd be pissed if they did that to my car.
