I'm searching for my 1st Mustang for a restomod. I want a '65 or '66 convt but all I'm finding in my area & budget are coupes. Was thinking of changing out the hardtop on a coupe and fiitting it for a convt but I havn't been able to find much info. on the subject. Would it be more cost effective to spend the extra $$ for an orginal convt? Obviously, keeping it 100% stock is not a priority. Any advise, leads, pics. and/or info would be great!!

You are gonna run into alot of problems as far as structural integrity goes. I'd recommend just buying a convertible to begin with and avoid the whole process of trying to turn a coupe into a conv. That's just what I'd do however...you do as you please and feel you have the confidence and know-how to do it, then go for it.

mustangs plus sells a kit called the "ronster" to convert a coupe to a roadster, however, its strictly a roadster and not a convertible (i.e., no top at all). I think it looks pretty sweet... Mustang Parts from Mustangs Plus: Ronster Kit
I have also seen a coupe online that had a removable hardtop. The guy reenforced his chassis, cut his roof off, made some weatherstripping for it, and made a latching system. I don't think this would be too awfully difficult to do with a little planning. I tried to find it but I couldn't, but I think it was yellow with black racing stripes and I think I saw it on car domain.

Hey thanks for the info! I'm a newbie looking for some help and it looks like I've come to the right place.
My hubby just bought a '69 Bronco, so it looks like this little lady's pony desire is going to have to wait a little while longer
Oh well, more time = more $$ for that original convt. It'll beat the headache of ripping the hardtop apart...$$ that'll be best used in other places.
I'm still interested to read what you think about the subject. Please keep the comments coming. I appreciate the replies. Thanks!

I wouldn't do it. The time and money necessary would probably be better spent on buying an original convertible. There's gonna be a lot more to it than just chopping off the top (unless you want a roadster).

^ i personally like the roadster, but if you want to drive it on extended trips or anything, I would save for the vert.
