hey guys problem. i have an under drive pulley system on my 5.0 and i have bypassed the air pump for the cats as there are none anymore. the ac is also axed. my problem is i can't seem to get any belts to last. the stocker is and 83 something but i need a 69. the 69 fits perfect when i first put it on. but after awhile it streches out and rubs the eventually breaks. a 68.5 is too tight and will not fit. suggestions?. are there any preformance belts that don't stretch out?

A. You have a pulley not in alignment with the rest of the accessories
B. One of your accessories is dragging
C. One of your pulley bearing/bushings is going bad
D. Evil Gremlins are sabotaging your car when you least expecting it.

So to fix this.
A. You need to spin all the accessories by hand to make sure they spin freely.
B. Put a belt on and watch it go around and look to see if it is rubbing hard to one side of any of the pulley's
C. Check all the pulley's for sharp nicks or damage to the pulley
D. Put a very bright light out in front of your car. Gremlins hate bright light

ya i have spun all of the pulleys by hand. they all move freely. have watched the belt turn and nothing is rubbing to one side or another. it seems like the tensioner stretches the belt out after a few days then it starts to rub, eventually breaks down and shreds.????????

I had problems with my belt falling off, it was because my power steering pulley shaft had cracked and when it spun it wobbled. You could order a set of march pulley's that have lips around them so nothing falls off... but those arent cheap.

Get the car running with no A/C or defroster on and pop the hood. Check under there and make sure all the pulleys are turning smoothly and there are no hiccups. Then turn your A/C on and check again. Watch the A/C compressor pulley and make sure it isn't locking up.
If it does, your A/C compressor has seized up.
This is just one of many possible causes that I have encountered personally.

The other problem is a bad bearing or bushing where when it is cold it will spin freely but underload it is worn and builds up heat and starts to drag and the belt starts to slowly slip that creates heat and will destroy the belt.
Sure you dont have Gremlins?????

I'm having this same problem.. no smog pump, no AC, and my tensioner eventually forces the belt at the tensioner pulley into contact with the part going up to the alternator pulley.. I have stock pulleys and use a 70.5 70 is too tight.. as it is with the 70.5 I have to loosen the power steering pump and lean it over to the side to get the belt on.. I'm trying to find a tensioner or see if I can't modify it to rest up higher..
But until then I am also open to suggestions
oh and its not a pulley nor alignment problem.. its that the belt, with tension, runs within a 1/8th inch of another part of the belt.. with the tensioner at the end of its travel (full spring strength) it doesn't take long to stretch the belt and contacts - with the tensioner pushing it towards the lower part... I bought a smog pump idler pulley (which would cure this) but I cannot find the lower bracket anywhere's (the one for the lower bolt on the smog pump..) so I'm SOL myself for the moment..

when you remove the a/c compressor the top axis of the s-belt drops down to the p/s pump and allows the belt to rub itself, by the tensioner, after it streaches. if im not mistaken UPR products makes a p/s pump relocation kit that moves the pump up in order to compensate for the lack of an a/c compreessor. by raisin gthe p/s pump up it brings the belt geometry back to where it works well. hope this info helps out.

its on the other side of the motor..
+ I used a bracket off a non-AC 5.0 so my power steering is in the proper spot..

smog pump eliminator would solve my problem
BUT I do not have the support brace that goes to the bottom bolt on the smog pulley

So does that A/C delete kit keep the PS pump in the factory position? Most of the ones I've ever seen move it up to where the A/C was. But from reading the description, that one doesn't...

Call up your local junkyard, or look on 50resto or something of that nature.
