My friend has a 2003 Mazdaspeed Protege, with a 5-speed transmission. I have a 2000 V6 with dual exhaust. He says his car is turbocharged from the factory, but I see no intercooler and you can't hear it spool, so Im guessing it's not a huge turbo, if he has one. Anyways, if we were to race right now, could I take him? If not, what would it take for me to beat him?

the mazdaspeed series of anything are pretty quick... i don't know how they run with the spec-v's, or if they are the same. If its about the same as a spec-v.... u have no chance with just duals.... buy a tuner, and you should have him down..

Engine : 4 cylinder, turbocharged, DOHC, front engine FWD
Displacement : 1,991 cc
Valve : 16 valves, 4 valves per cylinder
Transmission : 5-spd manual
Horsepower : 170 hp @ 5500 rpm
Torque : 155 lb-ft @ 4500 rpm
Redline : 6500 rpm
Top speed : 130 mph(estimated)
0-60 mph : 6.9 sec.
0-¼ mile : 15.4 sec @ 91.0 mph
60-0 braking distance : 135 ft
200 ft skidpad : 0.89 g
It has the edge stock for stock but good driving can make the difference. Run him and see. With engine mods you could wax him or even a small shot of nitrous.

I just don't understand how he has an edge with so much less power and torque. Im not questioning the information or anything, but with the much less power Im baffled at how he could keep up. Is his car lighter or anything?

his 4 valves per cylinder gives him an edge on you. I don't know when his turbo starts making boost but i'm sure it kicks in quick. It takes more then just horsepower to win a street race

The Mazda is 300+ lighter. He has 20 less HP but that is not much to over come with skillfull driving. Like I said it has a small edge. If you had 3.73 or 4.10 gears and had a great launch you could beat him in the 1/8 and maybe the 1/4, but on the interstate it would pass you unless you have the speed limiter raised or removed with a chip or tune

how? that doesnt make any sense................so a n/a cobra can beat a z06? its a 4v, whereas the z06 is a 2v pushrod.
also takes skill, better power to weight that your competition, better aerodynamics, better gearing, etc.............but with enough hp, you can overcome quite a bit of these factors. i raced a 4 door 4wd chevy 6.0 HD. down low was the only part i could hold him off. 0-90 i won by a couple cars. 60-110.......i got strolled by 3 cars+ when we shut down. why? b/c he had better gearing and hp to make up for his land anchor with brick-like aerodynamics

who said anything about a cobra??? i was talking about the mazda. i would put my money on a turbocharged engine with 4v/cylinder. It does make sense because more air can be taken in and more exhaust let out each cycle. It will accelerate quicker...what doesn't make sense about that?

I've got a 99 LX 5 Speed with just a dual exhaust (at the time) and I ran a 15.587 1/4mile and I am pretty good with the shifts so, you need a little bit of work. Good luck!
