This is super huge!!! AMD buying ATI is like AMD and Intel playing poker and AMD has a Royal Flush and Intel has three 8's
Intel was a big partner with ATI and this will have far reaching effects on Intel. AMD has always partnered with Nvidia more than ATI. So with this AMD could still partner with Nvidia and own ATI forcing Intel to shop alone or pay higher prices.
This is a major coup for AMD

dont be an nvidia bandwagon fan boy... they are both good. I went with nvidia this last time but I have also owned ati. I would say nvidia is more popular so it has more coverage over games and what nots but ATI isnt bad either.

ATI's new stuff SUCKS. Their Crossfire was a total flop. nVidia has totally dominated the new video card area.
I am an AMD fan boy so hopefully AMD will breath some new life into this product

I like my NVIDIA, but I've never had a ATI so i can't say which is better, but I imagine their both pretty equal like you said.

yeah they are pretty equal. Nvidia just came out with the 7950GT which is their answer to the X1900XTX, and coming in at 100$ less than the X1900XTX and they are just getting started with that card. and then ATI will answer back, then Nvidia. both these companies are examples of why competition is good for business. theyre constantly one-upping eachother, which is great for consumers.
i am a AMD fanboy now. just something about running Autocad2007 without any choppiness whatsoever, while watching Battlestar Galactica on the secondary monitor(which is really hooked up to my TV), loading internet windows every so often to look for info, and downloading more crap from BitComet at the same time and STILL running faster than the 3.0ghz intel at my work that can barely run 2 programs(Excel and Windows media) at the same time without freaking out.

See this is why ATI blows: X1900XTX <-- Who the hell names a Card this? Its confusing as hell. Do they see how many X's they can put in a model number? They had it great with the 9000 series. Very easy to understand what the best model was.

the more X's they use is to let you know how Xtreme things can get with it installed on your PC.

ATI put the whooping on nVidia back when it was the 9800 vs. the 5700 (or whatever nVidia named it, the one after the GeForce4). I bought a 9800XT and ran it for quite a while. It kicked ass pretty good. My buddy still runs that card in his machine. I went back with nVidia on my 6800GT and run a 7800GTX in my newest box. I actually like ATI, the company, better...but I buy whichever card is going to show the best looking graphics, get the best framerates, and not punish the wallet.
I've been on the AMD bandwagon since the A64 chips came out. I did build one P4C 2.4ghz machine since then, though.

Yes you are right the first 5000 series from Nvidia were crap until they came out with the 5900's They did kick ass. But all in alll both ATI and Nvidia have some great stuff. It is great to have 2 inventive competitors to keep them always striving to beat the other which in turn gives us great product and brings better pricing.
The thing here is Intel is stuck between a rock and a hard place and AMD is the Rock and the hard place. Controlling ATI going to cause Intel grief because now they will have to pay AMD for ATI intergrated Graphics on the Intel boards and Intel as for the most part snubbed Nvidia.

When you see Nvidia MX anything stay away it mean budget cheap ass card. They are decent cards for old or limited game use or for internet but anything close to moderate gaming they blow bad.

7950's in SLi=
i really doubt there will be games for quite a bit that will even come close to testing its abilities. for most, a 7800GT is sufficient, and 2 of them in SLi are even overkill.
