dont know if im posting this in the right area but, I have a 00 GT with 3.73 gears steeda lowering suspension, powerflow 75mm TB/upper intake plenum, K&N filter, diablosport custom dyno tune, the car is a 5 speed manual. OK now for the problem, for about two years now I have heard a noise from the rear of my car, ive been told it was the brakes, differential, gears, axle, axle bearing from several different sources. I have replaced the driver side axle and the bearings in that side aswell. The noise is stoll present when its in neutral or I have the clutch pushed in so I know its not the tranny, also the noise is speed sensitive (it gets a little louder and more frequent in repetition as speed increases) I am completely out of ideas of what this could be and am hoping someone else has experienced this and can help me out.

My bet would be that the gears are incorrectly installed. They have to set up correctly else they will whine. The whine is usually only noticed at a given mph range~ not constantly though.

well the gears were installed at a ford dealership by a ford technician, also the noise didnt start untill 2 years after they were installed. Its not a whine it almost sounds like a rubbing noise that starts as soon as I start moving, and gets only a little louder as I speed up, but the (tempo) speeds up as I do in the car. When my friend and I replaced the driver side axle there was no noticable wear in the gears(metal shavings) in the rear end or in the fluid in the diff......

just because a ford tech did something, doesn't mean its right. we have seen lately that ford techs may not know what we think they know. plus, its a stealership, and will take ur money and break your car to get more money. best bet is to take it to a reputable car shop in town by you. Simple Simon can do a lot of things, midas, auto king.... those are all pretty trust worthy.... i don't like meinike or whatever.

from what I have heard from numerous different sources, if it was my gears it would be a whining noise, also if they were installed incorectly i would have heard noise from the day I drove it out of the dealership after installation. it really isnt unbearable but im just too damn anal about my car and I hate having a problem with it that i dont know how to solve.

If they did not start for two years then it may very well be something else. Have you removed the rear cover and inspected for wear~ etc, and checked the bearings.

yes about two weeks ago when I replaced the driver side axle we had to remove the rear axle housing, my buddy (hes a tech for a lexus dealer her in stl and also owns a 03 GT, his brother has a 02 GT and his other brother has a 02 Cobra) so to say the least hes familiar with mustangs, said there was no metal shavings or anything in the fluid, and also said that the play in the drive shaft was normal (so we ruled out backlash)

what speeds is it most frequent?

It is happening at all speeds above about 5 mph, it almost sounds like a rubbing noise like wawawawawawawawa if that helps, it speeds up in frequency as I do in the car

I thought that if it was the gears it would be a pretty loud howling noise, and what will happen if I keep driving the car, its been going on for about two yrs now, and about 30k miles

actually a year ago I had to have my synchronizers in the transmission rebuilt and they replaced the throw out bearing when they did that, also my clutch engages when when I lift my foot about 1-2 inches and there is no slippage at all

i have what sounds like the same problem, only mine starts from a stand-still and goes away after 2mph. just a loud oscillating moan, almost like im trying to move with the brakes on(though theyre not, and brakes have been checked).
i think its my rear end trac-loc unit going out, as mine does it more when im trying to turn rather than straight.

bsmith: put the back of your car on some blocks or jack it up a bit so you can get under there and tighten up the bolts on your control arms. (a 3/4inch or about 15-17mm wrench should do it) i forget if its US or metric. they do tend to loosen up a bit on their own frequently and can build up a little bit of slack and you might hear a clinging or popping noise when the motion of your car changes, hitting a bump, &c.. Not ecactly sure if this is your problem but i seriously 99.9% doubt that its gears or pinion. try it out .. hope it helps you out |

also..if you have an aftermarket exhaust system its very likely that it could be loose and rubbing of clinging against your suspension go under there (make sure u had time to let them cool down so you wont burn the piss out of yourself) and shake them see if they aren't loose.
also put ur body weight against one of your rear fenders right above the wheel and rock your car side to side as hard as you can to test the suspension out.. if it makes the same noise then you've found ur prob.
just a few ideas that popped up.. either way i'd check and retorque the control arm bolts and if they're right see what kinda condition the bushings are in it might need replacing alltogether. if they do i'd recommend some tubular ones they're very nice and you can grease them eaisly through the grease alamites. good luck bro hope this helps u out |

I really do think that the suspension it squeaky because when I drive down a road It squeaks but the wierd thing is that when I apply the brakes it stops???

Hmm... Well if it stops when you apply your brakes then it's more than likely brake related. Do you have ABS? Also might want to check you calipers...
I thought it might be suspension because it's a common problem for the stangs control arms to loosen over time, and after reading the thread it appears you've messed with everything except suspension... Hmmm
