4.10 gears

Everybody says that 4.10 gears are really bad in gas but exactly how bad? Is it as bad as having a GT or worst?
I have a automatic 2004 V6 and most of my driving is in the city???

If most of your driving is in the city you might actually see an increase in gas mileage if you can keep your foot off the little right pedal.

gas mileage does not get hurt too bad, just get them. Although it makes it alort harder to resist flooring it often. Remeber you will need a tune if you have an automatic to correct yoru speedometer due to the gear change.

That is correct. On 99+ autos you have to get a chip or tuner to compensate for the gear change.
On a manual you can get away with a speed-cal adjuster.

Here is the deal 4.10's are cool but in the real world unless you are a track dog you really wont notice the difference between 4.10's and 3.73's You say most of the miles you use is City then you will be OK but with gas prices as high as they are you will notice the drop in fuel mileage with 4.10's at 75mph on the interstate. basically you will cut around 40 miles off per tank. It is all in what is important. It is your car and you decide.
4.10's are cool but 3.73's are not to shabby either.

I'd get the 4.10s. I had them in the '90 for a while and wish I would never have gotten rid of them. The small trade-off in mileage is worth it for the extra punch in my opinion.

I started with 3.73's and now have 4.10's Should have made the big jump first.
I was lucky and a friend needed 3.73's so I was able to resell them.

I beg to differ, I have driven my friends car with 3.73's (stick) and my car has 4.10's (stick). My car seems quite a bit quicker, we both have the same other mods too ebay cai, and magnaflows. |

You are also forgetting and auto has worse gearing compared to a manual tranny'd mustang. The final gear ratio (calculating though the transmission) as you go though the gears will be closer to a manual with 4.10s compared to 3.73s. I would go 4.10s dont fear the gear.
Gear install is a tricky thing... the shop needs to know HOW to do it. You simply can not just bolt them up and go. They have to be installed to a specific spec including but not limited to: backlash, pinion depth, crush sleeve set right, pattern matching, etc. If a shop does not know how to do those things or even what they are I wouldnt let them touch it. Also, its far better to pay more for a better job than save a little and wind up having to redo EVERYTHING due to you didnt get the job done right. Just a bit of advice I fell victim to myself.

Street racing again???? As I said in normal driving is not as noticable. On the track that is different. As I said before if you are not going to go to the track a lot I would go with cheaper fuel and get the 3.73's. If you are going to go to the track get 4.10'. Most of you are young and not nearly as sensible in this approach. Consider the long run in a couple of years when fuel is $5.00 a gallon.

I could notice a difference in normal driving when I went to 4.10s to 3.73s. That's a pretty big jump... Hence, a lot of people are starting to use the 3.90s which are a good compromise. |

How the hell do you notice it in NORMAL driving as in normal city driving unless you lead foot and really so what if there is minimal notice. For the reality of it is if you dont go to the track or street race then it is just a choice of mileage.
Once again it is up to the individual and preference. I have never said he should get either I just throw out options and what is his desire to improve. I also want to point out that will gas might be in a slight decline as of right now the world continues to use more gas and increased gas prices will have an effect.
Just something to think about

I consider it pretty normal to stomp on the gas every once in a while, especially getting out on the highway. I don't drive around like Speed Racer all the freakin' time like some, but what's the point of spending money on performance parts if you aren't going to have a little fun with them? |

Never said that stomping is not fun. I do it all the time but are you trying to say 3.73's are not fun. If so that is a rather asinine statement.
We here are trying to give people good information and OPTIONS!!! If we are going to be like the other mustang sites and be Nazi's about what we suggest we might as well just move over there with those nimrods.
But alas we are different and opinions are good and options are even cooler. We here seem to be heading into that rutt. I will not assimilate to one option or opinion. There are to many good products or options and reason for the differences.
