Just curious why some people are very particular about leaving it in 1st gear when they park. Is this better for the transmission in any way? I usually park with it in neutral

First gear is a Manuals equavilent to Park.
would you put a Automatic in Neutral when you park it?
Put it in 1st/Park AND pull up the E-Brake. its a great habit to get into. if the car ever gets hit when just the tranny is engaged(IE ebrake is disengaged), then you have a transmission gear trying to stop the mass of the car if the tires grab, which can shatter gears. with the parking brake engaged, less of the brunt is delivered to the tranny.

first gear unless you like the suprise of finding your car has rolled down a hill. the e-brake on mustangs has had issues in the past (recall) and I still dont trust them. There is no reason not to leave it in first gear~
I just recently read an article of a 2004 mystic cobra convertible that just put it in neutral and came back outside to find his car had rolled down a huge hill and SOME HOW dodged two trees... else it would probably have been nearly totaled.

I guess it's a habbit i got myself in because it was easier to put it in neutral and then shut the engine off. And just in case a family member borrows my car i wouldn't want them to start it in first and have them release the clutch and have my car jump into my tool bench. I don't park on any steep hills anyways and my car is always in the garage.

^^anyone that drives a manual should know "clutch in, then start".
if a family member jumped my car into the wall, oh well, thanks for the new paintjob pops!

I throw it in first all the time. And if I'm on a hill, I throw the e-brake on just for shits and giggles I guess. I thought that's what you're supposed to do, of course, I've only been doing this manual thing for like 2 months.

someone could come up to your car, cut your E brake cable and roll your car down a hill/street/etc if you dont leave it in gear.

It would have to be a midget to cut the cable because there's no room under there. Plus they would get run over by the car if it's on a hill.
Natural selection at it's best if that did happen.

I was just giving an example of why not to be stupid (aka not leave it in neutral)
