hello all,
in a little less than a year i will be back home where i have access to a hydraulic lift, air powered tools, various style welders and indoor garage for storing my car as i attempt to rebuild it on my own.i am just gathering info right now so i can start when i get home.
i feel a little background will help get the ball rolling.
i am going to school to become an A&P mechanic. i have an excellent grasp of mechanical concepts. i work on my own cars when needed. i will also have guidance in the form of my father-in-law. he has rebuilt a few older chevy trucks. with the garage and his help as well as online assistance, i plan on resto modding my 68.
the car is clean but needs love. its a coupe. c-4 289. originallity of parts is not a great concern of mine.i plan on replacing most of what i can with aftermarket upgrades.
i would like to do the following as a start.
remove the motor, transmission, and the body and all body componets to start with the frame.
get a rolling chassis as soon as possible using aftermarket suspension and brake componets.
for the frame,i was thinking of blasting it and then powder coating it. are there other options and benefits to them?
i would like to mount a newer 5 speed manual transmission in it.
(would the drive train from a 89 5.0 work?)
the body has never been hit but there is rust. i am going to be replacing alot of sheet metal. both front fenders, floor pans, radiator support, gas tank, yada yada yada. the rust is not that bad i just have it set in my mind what i think i should do.
the interior will be worked over as well. i want to replace the seats with higher back seats. also newer style seatbelts. the console and dash will remain the same.
i will be on to ask questions later as i go. thanks for any help you provide.

Yes, the 89 5.0 drivetrain will work. The EFI 5.0 and T5 swap into the classics is actually pretty popular (as well it should be). I'm not sure on all the specifics of what you need, but I know you can get a wiring kit from Painless Wiring specifically for this swap that will take care of all the wiring you will need to run EFI if you choose to do so.
I would imagine you may also need a new crossmember for the tranny as well. But once again, you shouldn't have to have it custom made or anything because plenty of companies make parts for this swap.

don't do the painless harness, the fordfuelinjection.com one is WAY better, IMO. Takes less than an hour to hook up. Here is my right up on converting to a 5.0/t5: http://www.mustangevolution.com/foru...5-a-18370.html

You do realize that the body is mounted on a sub-frame (unibody) Body does not come off of the frame; doors, hood and trunk is all you will be able to remove... Good luck in the restoration.

anybody have any experience with tearing down the car to prep for a ground up restoration? are there any good books on the subject? i have recently gotten the car into my garage and am ready to slowly start the rebirth. 
again any comments are appreciated |

Check out mustangsteve.com for cable clutch conversion parts. Great guy and very nice parts. I used them all on my 65. His fastback was recently featured in Mustang Monthly.

Get the shop manual it has all the info you'll need. Also check out mustang restoration handbook from hpbooks.It's not a step by step but it'll help.

ok guys, i need to know how to hotwire this car to get it to my shop. at the moment it is sitting in my garage and the ignition is screwed. i can turn the key 360* with no starting (obviously). any ideas?
