I'm looking for a set of rims to fit my car. I'm thinking of going w/ the FR500's or Bullit style 10" rear and 9" front. I've seen many cars having a 35 in the back and a 40 in the front and was wondering the effect that has on performance and the way the car sits or why that is. I thought it makes more sense to put thicker tires in rear than in front. Also I read somewhere the new camaro will have 19" rear and 18" front. I like the idea of it having a tall rear end dipping forward, but would like to avoid the cost of buying the rare & expensive 19" wheels/tires so I thought of going w/ 18" rear and 17" front, what effect will that having and will this defeat the purpose of going w/ xxx/35/xx rear and xxx/40/xx front. Correct me if I'm wrong 10"=265 and 9"=245?

I'd recommend going with at least a 265 on the 9 inch and at least a 295 on the 10 inch. Personally I'd run a 275 on the front and 315 on the back with that setup of wheels.

As far as the look, if you set the car up correctly, varying wheel sizes will give the car a very mean look.

If you're wondering what sidewall to run, use a speed calculator to figure out what size sidewall you should run to make sure your speedo is not off. Otherwise you will have to correct that as well.

corvettes do that with the wheels being an inch bigger in the rear.

and also for sure go with wider tires than those posted..lowflyn's suggestions are good

I dunno about the sidewall thicker in front :dunno: If it were me and i was going to stagger the sidewall, i'd go with taller on the rears. Was it a fwd car you saw that on?

So what you're saying is that I can fit a tire from 265 - 275 on a 9" and a 295 - 315 tire on a 10" rim? Does that mean I may be able to go w/ a 245 on my stock wheels that originally carry a 225? I've noticed some cars have very mean looks as a result of wider tires and that's what I'm going for. What do you guys think bout 17" front w/ 35 sidewall and 18" rear w/ 45 sidewall? Have you guys even heard of anyone thinking about that or am I crazy?

How will the above mentioned wheel/tire combo affect the performance and stance of my car? How many inches will the top of the fenders arch be away from the top of my tires? Will the car drop in height?

your car won't drop in height.

It will help the appearance a ton as well as the stance. My car looks waaaaaay meaner with the 275's all the way around compared to my stockers. It is night and day.

Performance wise your car will handle better and it will be a lot harder to slide at all if you take hard turns etc. It will improve traction drastically, however your car will not feel as quick...because it isn't. If your worried about drag times, you will be able to launch a lot harder but the added weight hurts. It is rotational mass so it hurts more than just 100 lbs in your back seat or whatever. The quickness difference is quite noticable. Your car will also not brake as well. It will require more application of the breaks to slow down the car because it weighs more. This is also quite noticable.

To most it is worth the disadvantages...and I will say for me it is definately worth it as well. I put my stock front wheels/tires back on a few weeks ago and really noticed the braking especially. I still consider it well worth it to have the rims on, but I am more seriously considering some brake upgrades now.

About the 45 thing in the back..i am kinda considering that also but I dunno. I think it will throw off your speedometer so you will need a speedcal or chip/tune. It also means you can't rotate your tires so, i dunno.

I think you are a little confused on what the numbers on a tire means. As you stated above some have 35 tall tires and some have 40. Those numbers are a percent, not a fixed size that is the same for any tire with that number. If you have a 40 sidewall tire then the tire's sidewall's height is 40% of its width. If your tire is 900mm's wide thats a very tall sidewall (just an example)

You need to keep the same overall sidewall height, you just do a little math. A 245/45/17 is the same height as a 275/40/17 (or as close as you can get by whats produced)

For a 10 inch wide tire you really must run a 315 wide tire at least~ for a 9 wide a 275 works fine.

I think these will be my magic numbers 315/35/18 rear and 275/40/17...are those reasonable? Will my car be taller in the back than the front causing it to bend over forward?

315 for the rears will be too wide unless you get nitto tires. But if you get 315/35 your rears will be quite a bit taller than your fronts, not too much but noticable.
