I have a 2000 GT and i recently had the drive belt, tensioner and idler replaced. The engine makes a weird noise when i accelerate fast. If i push on the gas gradually than it really doesn't make a noise. If i push on it harder to go faster you can hear like a ticking noise that gets louder as the rpm's go up. When i took my car in to get those parts replaced i asked the technician what it could be and he said it's normal. It seems i can only make the noise from inside the car and not when i hit the throttle under the hood. I want to believe the guy but it just doesn't seem right. Does anyone have any idea what it could be? It's definitely coming from the engine, near the front somewhere. I thought it could've been the pulleys but more than likely not.

Sounds like valve knock to me, try running a higher octane or a different gas station next time you fill up and see if that fixes the problem.

Thanks.....i will try that out. I usually go up an octane every few weeks to clean out the system and injectors. I'll let you know if it works.

Running higher octane on a car that's not tuned for it will do you no good besides waste money, but, a car that "ticks" as you have described might can be solved by either finding a higher quality gas or running higher octane. My old car was bad about ticking with gas from a certain station, so I just don't fill up there.

Oh, i see....i will have to wait for my tank to empty now. I filled it up a few days ago. I'm not sure what all modifications were done to it before i got it from the dealership. I've done some modifications but none of them would effect what octane it is. The ticking/knocking sound maybe the valves. It does make sense. I know some modifications need a higher octane. Great, when i was finally getting good gas mileage for it too!

car idling, hood closed, do you hear any ticking? (esp from around the fenderwell areas..) (and try to tune out the injector ticks, they can be fairly loud)

If the noise started after your pulley/belt swap then it could be a bad install. If the noise was resident before and after then get a second opinion. Injector noise is only noticable at idle. Valve, or even worse, rod/crank noise would get louder when you're on the throttle.
I replaced heads on my '02 GT due to a loud tick at idle, heard mostly from the fenderwells with the hood closed (IE sitting in car with the window down, esp against a wall you could hear it.. loudly) there's a TSB for certain 4.6s stating that if noise cannot be narrowed down by cutting out cylinders, then replace the head(s) the heads or cam guides warp or some such, not enough to affect performance but enough to make a lotta noise
and yes, it can be heard at idle, and I heard mine at higher RPMs.. new heads = sound gone

yeah, one fo the reason on the older 5.0's you had to run premium, anything less and youd get mad knock under accel.
id try to put some higher octane gas in. if youre using 89, put 91, etc. if you using 93 and it still ticks, for shits and giggles find a station that runs 100octane and fill up with that. if it fixes the problem, you have a bad case of knock, if the knock persists, you know its something else and simply adding more octane will not remedy the situation.

The only time you need to run premium on a 5.0 is if you bump your timing.

not on every 5.0 ive ever been in, they all had knock/pinging with anything but 91 or better, and most were stock.
