My car has 76k miles and I want to change its' original stock plugs. I bought replacements for it from Wal-Mart: Autolite AP605 Platinum. Are they good? Should I get some other brand, what does everyone recommend? Also I don't know if I'll be able to replace them. I'd like to avoid paying $40 for labor to put them in so a tutorial or guide that someone can point out will help. I'm excited to getting them on...should I expect my car to feel different or with fuel economy?

Not sure if the #s right but motorcraft plugs are basically autolites.. you wont' feel much difference but you might notice a small increase in throttle response, fuel economy might go up.. but don't expect jaw dropping gains

I wasn't expecting jaw drops but maybe a difference in sound when I turn it on. I got the number AP605 from the Wal-Mart electronic lookup machine. Would my plugs need to be gapped, this is important so how do I figure out if I need gapping. A guide is what I'm really in need of.

well its a good idea to check them anyhow.. get one of the tools looks like

then look for the spec under your hood.. it should list on one of the emissions labels the spark plug gap recommendation - then find the matching or nearest # on your tool, and it should slide in with a tiny bit of resistance..

My hood was replaced so it doesn't have that sticker anyone know what it would be for my 2004 3.9L. I do know what the gapping tool looks like, they got them everywhere usually at check out.

just covering all bases..
I would assume .054-.060 gap but don't quote me on that, check with someone who knows for sure (or can check their cars..)

i just went to autolite.com and it's .054 thanks though. I just need to know how to get into the passanger side plugs. any tips are really helpful. I don't wanna take something apart and not be able to even take the car to a mechanic. At autolite.com I see that they differentiate the 3.8L and the 3.9L by calling them: V6-3.8L F/inj. (12V) SOHC (4) and V6-3.9L F/inj. OHV (6). SOHC means single over head cam and OHV means over head valve, right? What's the difference? Also what w/ the 3.8 (4) and the 3.9L (6)?

It is .054, and I'm changing mine tomorrow lol. As far as the passenger side, I just take my intake off and it's all there, since you still have the egr, it will be a touch harder, but just take your time and do it right. Also, put some anti-seize on the threads before you put the new ones in, it's always a good idea. As far as what they are differentiating between, I have no idea lol.

yea..i put a little grease on the tip and anti-seize on the threads...it's not really hard, it just takes some time and maneuvering to get to em. You don't have to take off the upper intake, if you don't want to. Be sure to just pull the wire off of the one replacing, then replace it, then put the wire back on so you don't get the wires mixed up

The reason I feel this is very complicated is cuz I can't find a way to get socket/rachet all the way down there. Is it necessary to use maybe a swivel and extension?

try fitting the socket on the plug, then attach the extension, then the wrench?if that fails, try a swivel, but be careful going back in, you can crack the porcelain if your angle isn't right

Grease on the tip? I've never heard of this. Your saying to add grease to the tip where it ignites and the end where you connect the boot of the wire, right? How much grease?
About the anti-seize, how much should I add?
When I get the thread to go in I should hand tighten all the way and I wonder how tight I should tighten. I'm sure there's a measurement tool with a gauge that you can tighten to a specific amount of force, but I don't have it...so how far should I tighten, as tight as I can maybe?

Dielectric silicone on the tip of your spark plug (where the boot hits..) don't put anything on the ignition tip, the antisieze is deceiving, a little bit goes a long way.. a dab'll do ya..
hand tighten it as far as you can.. then snug it up with the wrench..

^yea...just put the grease on the part where the plug wire attaches, nothing goes on the igniting part. You just need like a little squirt of antisieze to go the height of the threads and then just rub it around..doesn't take much. You may need to use the swivel and extension...just whetever you need to get it done. Jut tighten them until they feel snug...it does not need to be really tight.

I don't even use an extension on mine, goes on fine with the spark plug socket, then attach the rachet to it and go from there. Took me about 30 minutes to do mine, talking to ppl at the same time on how easy the mustangs are lol. Need to do the gt next, some other day I guess.

I got it done I used swivel head and extensions I did the grease and all. I did something that doesn't leave it perfect. The plugs are gapped all to about .57 and under my hood it said the range is from .51 - .57. I started w/ the passenger side since it was the most difficult from the cab towards the front of the engine. The first two I gapped to .54 changing it only .03 but I got a little excited and so carried away that I forgot to even check the rest. I noticed I nice little kick back when I turn the key, nice starting power. Took me about an hour - hour and a quarter. Thanks to all that helped. What do you guys suggest for wiring?

If you have a hard time getting the plugs on next time try using the old boots for the install it works wonders
